I know the place. I have been there and met with the Director and Audiologist Ms

Bell. Please remember me and say hi to her on my behalf when you both meet

next. She is an extremely good audie. I do not know much about the CI physician

since I met with Dr Jed Kwartler there. Anyway UMDNJ CI Center is a well known

center and you are in good hands.

Wish you good luck in your CI journey. I am a candidate too, but am waiting for

my ear infections to heal completely. My physician is Dr Darius Kohan at NYC, I

have seen several Physicians in NJ and finally was referred to Dr Kohan and I

now know that I am in very good and capable hands. My journey for a CI so far

has been a very very long one and am still slowly inching towards it!!.

Hi :

Thanks for the good wishes. I know why it takes so long for CI surgery there at

UMDNJ, this is due to having just one day in a week (Tuesday) or one day every

other week schedules for CI surgery. Thats why the waiting period is very long.

Imagine the wait it is too unnerving, I had to seek an appointment to see

Bell in Dec of 2003 for an appointment on March 4th 2004. They were understaffed

there and is the only CI audie there in that Center.

Dr Kwartler is still there, as the website information says. Dr Jyung seems to

have recently joined their staff there. He was not there before in March when I

met with and Dr Kwartler. Dr Kwartler also did not accept my Insurance, but

someone in this forum was implanted by him and had a very nasty experience after

the implant. He did narrate to me his problems and does'nt speak highly of Dr

Kwartler.

Anyway good that you are uner Dr Jyung's care. His resume from the website seems

to be good.

All the best with your evaluation process and best wishes to the meet with the

" Shrink " - I mean the Psychologist. Where in NJ are you? I am in Highland Park,

Middlesex County.

Hi Ravi,

I am so glad you told me about that because I would have gone into New York

instead.

It is far but I would have made the effort.

And yes it is a far wait at that clinic I waited more than a month to see

.

I like Dr. Jyung so far but do not like his assistant who is a doctor there.

I didn't understand the assistants name but that guy really should learn how

to talk to people.

I explained to Dr. Jyung my concerns about healing because I am diabetic and

he was very good to me.

I do hate the waiting part but I think with my insurance they have to get

the okay for it also.

I am not sure but the sooner the better.

I get a lot of anxiety waiting for all of this.

I don't think the shrink should be a big deal for me I have pretty realistic

expectations for the implant.

Or on the other hand maybe my expectations aren 't all that high.

I just expect to be a little disappointed I guess.

It seems that UMDNJ requires this so I have to do it.

A lot of clinics don't require it I guess.

I live in Northern New Jersey near Blairstown which is by the Delaware water

gap.

I am 12 miles from PA. Near Stroudsburg.

I think maybe Newton is a good description of where I am also if that helps.

How did you find your new doctor Ravi?

Where in New York are you going to go?

Hi ,

Now it is my turn to wish you a good surgery experience tomorrow... we

all will be thinking of you. You've been wonderful to me as I started

on my journey towards my CI. Remember your advice: sleep sitting up,

take the painkiller no matter what, every 4 or 6 hours (and don't wait

for the pain to come!), stack away easy, comfort food like chocolate

pudding and Jell-O, mashed potatoes, etc.

Looking forward to your next message after you cross over the hurdle.

Best of luck on your surgery!! I just got back from having the bandage

taken off and stitches removed. I'm sure you will do great and there

is a whole (hearing) world ahead of you! Just do what said as

far as being comfortable and it will be smooth sailing! Good luck!!!

Thanks . I will sure let you know. I have been researching

prepaid plans for cell phones but am thinking it wont save me anything in

the long run. But it might be a good way to try out different phones.

These are cell phones you can buy at Wal-Mart or wherever. I am just wanting

a cell phone )per police officer recommendation) for emergencies when Telly

and I run into problems walking. Have you heard of these?

Ok, went to WalMart's site. TracFone, T Mobile, and Virgin Mobile are

three choices. Keep in mind, you have to buy minutes every so often or you

lose the unused minutes. When you buy more, the unused minutes roll over.

In other words, you cant buy a prepaid card and expect it to be good for

more than 30 or 60 days without buying more.

When you go to Wally Mort, check the phones they offer. I like flip

phones and I like phones that have nice raised buttons, which many dont

have. You wont find a bare bones phone either, they all are going to have

much more than you want. So focus on what is important. Is it tactile? Is

it t coil compatible? See if they will let you try them in the store first.

Let me know what you come up with.

By the way, if you plan to carry the phone with you on trips, be aware

that with prepaid planbs, you may not always be in covered territory.

After a dog with an aggressive bark went after Telly last Spring, a police

officer advised me to get a cell phone for emergencies, and that is

basically what I want it for, plus if we get lost while walking, or need to

call a cab, or a neighbor for help, so perhaps may need more minutes.

Otherwise I have no need for cell phone. We have MidWest Wireless here. Any

suggestions as to the way to go? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Best bet is go to Wally World and check out the plans. And the phones.

The 3 prepaid companies Wally has use existing networks. Just remember that

if you dont use the minutes, you lose them. TracFone offers an annual card,

not sure of T Mobile or Virgin Mobile.

With any cell phone that has a charged battery you can make a 911 call and you

don't have to pay any company for service. Many fire depatment collect peoples

old cell phones and give them to senior citizen and others that need them for

911 emergency calls only. If you have any questions, e-mail me.

Hi ,

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your post. I had a few

bad days after taking a long car ride and then we had house guests

for a few days.

I think I put my foot in my mouth when I recommended that your

partner come home from the hosptial with potent medication. From

what you say, she's already on a super-duper potent med and wants to

get off of it.

I think Dr. Rand's advice for her to stay on her current med when

she goes home to recuperate makes sense. That doesn't seem like it

would be a good time to take that med away. On the other hand, maybe

he'll add an additional med if she is experiencing intolerable pain.

The good news, I think, is that once your partner is working with

Dr. Rand, she will be able to work with his team, including pain

specialists, who could gradually change her medication regimen. And

ultimately - some months after surgery - hopefully her pain will

have subsided and she won't need strong meds.

It makes sense to me that your partner is in a bad mood - she's

scared and hurting. This is a time when people do go 'inside'

themselves to try to get a handle on their fears and other feelings.

She may seem anti-social, but it's probably temporary and a response

to the anxiety of the surgery. At least that's my guess. I know I

did something similar - I refused to talk with the people in my life

who were being negative about my upcoming surgery - I had my husband

talk to them instead. I felt I had to keep thinking positive and I

couldn't risk hearing anything that might cause me to doubt my

decision to have the surgery.

I hope some of this has been helpful. Please keep us informed of

your and your partner's efforts to cope through this terrible ordeal.

Best Wishes,

Andy

Ellen,

I've been thinking about your original post since yesterday. I am in a different situation than most of the rest of you who responded because I am a member of staff that leads worship--the choir director--and have served churches for 25+ years. Russ has literally grown up in the church as has his brothers--my "baby" took his first steps in the choir loft!

That being said, my kids have been held up by the the congregations--much like PKs ("preachers kids")--and cannot get away with anything. Except for . He is doted on and given breaks his brothers never were. The last church I served before my present one also had a young man with autism (HF) in the congregation--he was my best "ringer" in my hand bell choir. Because I cannot sit with Russ and he is too old for the religious ed class pew(when he was younger, I served a church that had all the kids sit together for most of the service and then leave before the sermon), my other sons and hubby (when I twist their arms and threaten enough!) take him to services. Sadly, it's usually only Christmas Eve and Easter now, but it's something. We have found sitting either in the front pew or the very back pew or the balcony makes a difference and he does well in any of those places but not in a middle pew. He has ushered--much like suggested--handing out service bulletins and like Noah, has done custodial work, so he's comfortable in the sanctuary. Perhaps, choosing a different pew will help. We think Russ needs to see an "escape route" for him to be comfortable.

I do write a holiday letter which I send out with our Christmas cards and fill family in about everyone. I hear you about the NT kids--had to "explain" this year why Greg is leaving his PhD program--LOL! Grandma was not amused. Russ stuffed all the cards, sealed them and stamped them this year, as well as hubby's business holiday cards--a total of 500 cards!
