Guest guest
Isn't there an obvious conflict of interest where the psychiatrists are profiting from doing ECT and telling the state their opinion? If there isn't already a law that pertains to that, perhaps the family would do well to use that fact to embarrass the politicians until the system is forced to change. > > Posted By: Maddock Members in Stop the forceful use of > Electro Convulsive 'Therapy' End Forced Electroshock > http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/health/family-fight-to-stop-shock-t\ > herapy-being-forced-on-man-40-160963.html >
Guest guest
There is no obvious conflict of interest here since in Ireland, N Ireland & rest of UK the vast majority of ECT is carried out within the state or nationalised health care system. So the psychiatrists are employees and do not profit from their decisions. They get their salary whether they give the ECT or some other alternative. The problem from the psychiatrists point of view is that in the worst cases of depression ..........what are the alternatives? Remember in the Delete 59b campaign the aim is to remove clause 59b and not to end ECT. within in this, the patient & his family need to watch out they are being used! So what works for the patient ..........perhaps the family will speak up ? see also -http://www.delete59b.com/ Please consider signing this e-petition: We the undersigned support the deletion of section 59b of the Irish Mental Health Act 2001 which relates to the involuntary use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Section 59b presently states: ( where the patient is unable or unwilling to give such consent— (i) the programme of therapy is approved (in a form specified by the Commission) by the consultant psychiatrist responsible for the care and treatment of the patient, and (ii) the programme of therapy is also authorised (in a form specified by the Commission) by another consultant psychiatrist following referral of the matter to him or her by the first-mentioned psychiatrist. Please note that this Bill and this petition does not interfere with the right of people to choose to have ECT administered if that is their wish. > >> > Posted By: Maddock Members in Stop the forceful use of> > Electro Convulsive 'Therapy' End Forced Electroshock> > http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/health/family-fight-to-stop-shock-t\> > herapy-being-forced-on-man-40-160963.html> >>
