Oh, the irony...

Okay, here's one...

While my SED daughter is at preschool I teach aerobics at a local gym and my 11

month old son (average statured) goes to the playcare there. Jake is at that

stage where he gets himself up to a standing position without holding on and

just stands there expectantly, not knowing what to do. Anyway, I went to pick

him up today after I was finished and this woman was saying how cute he was (I,

ahem, couldn't help but agree!) and then she said " they look so funny like that

when they start to stand, like little midgets - like they shouldn't be standing

at all " .

Ok - relax, and don't flame me ! The reason I'm telling this is 'cause I thought

it was pretty ironic. One - I happen to be the mother of a dwarf (that's the " D "

word, not the " M " word!) and she didn't know it...and well, my daughter and son

are the same size right now (works good for clothing!) and it does sort of

surprise people when she walks and talks up a storm. Second - well, I guess that

would be the fact that she didn't know this ! The playcare worker kind of

avoided my eye at that point and I gotta admit I didn't seek hers out either

(although I think she might have rolled her eyes) ! See - I didn't want to

embarass the lady and, while normally I would correct her regarding that " M "

word, I just wasn't sure it would come out right (that is, nicely).

Aw, heck. I know she didn't mean anything derogatory by the way she said it. I

would also bet she has never encountered a little person in real life.

I have a mental list of snappy comebacks but I just couldn't think of one at

that particular moment. Maybe I was too exhausted !
