I've written genealogy books. Depends on your status in the gen tree. Are

you related to these people?

Pictures are interesting things, not like the written word. If you wouldn't

mind, e-mail me privately and we can talk about this more. I also know some

things about right-to-publish pictures from the media's point of view also.

I've co-published " Annuals " , " newspapers " and my own private photo's.

As far as I know I am 'NOT' related to the person

writting the book...everytime I try to ask questions

everyone shut up and won't tell me anything. They

won't show me the book either unless I buy it...

I was told he is selling it for $150 a book.

I still believe he doesn't have the right to put the

picture in the book with permission from me. But I

could be 100% wrong.

Thanks for your reply

" Frogboy, "

I'm not a professional expert but this is what I know about photography:

Usually the rights of the photo, (in any book, magazine, etc) belongs to

the original photographer - not to the subject of what's being taken. If it

was done for a company, it goes to them.

*However*, a real photographer would get the permission along with the

names of the people being photographed. Minors (faces) are usually not

allowed to be taken w/o parental permission.

I would definitely look this up.

Good luck.

Our family does geneology. We are heavily involved in it. If the picture

is of a public gathering, and you are in it, then it is just like having

your picture in the newspaper. If the picture is of the group, and each

person is named on that picture, such as a school picture, then there is not

a problem either. Family pictures usually fall under the same catagory as a

school picture. If you stood in the picture to have it taken, then you have

accepted having it posted.

The +ACI-copyright+ACI- is where things get sticky. If the copyright was taken

from

another copyright, without permission, the the writer is in an uncomfortable

situation. That would apply to the writer and not to you though.

Usually when one does geneology, and are working on a 'family album' then it

makes it easier to put pictures in for the family to 'compare' traits and

such.

It's early and I'm in a rush, but I hope I made sense. +ADs-o)))

I pretty much agree with all this. I just didn't have the time (sorry) to

write it all out. My next book is almost ready to go to press and it will

have several pics in it of other people. Of these " shots " , I only have to

ask permission of one person because the rest were what we call " Public

Domain " .
