I just wanted to share my happy experience at Miglet's soft opening yesterday.

My boyfriend and I went for our 6th year anniversary to go check out the new

shop, what a delight! It was just like the days of going to the local bakery to

pick up some cupcakes or cookies, maybe even a birthday cake. was giving

out free samples of chocolate chip cookies, lemon cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes,

red velvet cupcakes, and well that's what was left when we finally got there at

3:50PM (she was scheduled to close at 4PM - whoops!). The most inspiring/cute

moment though and can attest to this, was a little boy who came in with

his younger brother and parents.

He circled around the free samples, his mouth was clearly watering for some

cookies, finally he grabbed one and then put it back on the tray due to a

miscommunication between him and his mom. Quickly his mom and dad tell him not

to put it back and go ahead and eat it. He ate it rather quickly and proclaimed,

" Yay! I can have cookies again! " And then his younger brother came over and

grabbed a little cupcake, mind you he was super adorable probably all of 4 years

old. The younger one started eating his cupcake and then motioned to the his

older brother to go sit down on the appropriately placed kid's adirondack chairs

next to the store front window. For me it was quite comical to see the two

little boys just " chillin " eating their gluten-free goodies. It was almost like

they were in a trance. At first I thought they both had Celiac, but come to find

out the older boy had a gluten intolerance but the younger one did not. After

they finished their goodies, the mom said to , " Okay, we'll see you on

Wednesday. Thank you so much! " While everyone was saying their goodbyes, the

younger one (the 4ish year old), said very politely with a big smile, " We'll

seee you on Wenddsssday! " Meanwhile the older boy with the gluten intolerance

stood there staring at the other goodies, clearly waiting to grab the whole

tray.

I think it's very exciting to see the transformation from what was initially a

very dismal diagnosis transformed into a positive experience with companies like

Miglet's, Mariposa, Natural Food Work's, Gluten-Free Specialty, and the list

goes on and on and on. No more is our outlook just cardboard and paper, we

finally are getting recognized and the sense of normalcy is returning. The

companies in conjunction with the foundations and kid's camp in Livermore, plus

Team Gluten-Free are all making gluten-free fun and if anything making it less

of punishment, but more of a reward. Anywho, just wanted to share this and by

the way, this was in no way an endorsement. I'm just really touched by the

effect that good gluten-free food has on those who are newly diagnosed or those

who have struggled to find good substitutes. Hah, I remember crying the first

time I had GOOD gluten-free bread at a Benicia farmer's market. Talk about

embarrassing!

I can't wait to see what the next few years bring.
