I developed a pretty severe intolerance to dairy/casein after a round of antibiotics last spring.  After about 8 months of being GF/CF and trying 5 or so other (cheaper) brands of probiotics, a GI finally recommended VSL#3 to me, and it WORKED.  Of course, your issues may be very different than mine were, and I'm not Celiac (my kids are), but I can eat dairy without any issues at all now, which was well worth the $80 to me.

Good luck-On Thu, Jul 1, 2010 at 10:29 PM, ahpril8 <ahpril8@...> wrote:

Hi all-

Dr. Aron recommended that I try the probiotic VSL#3

Its $86 for 30 packets and the website recommends 1-4 packets/day.

Wow!

I searched old messages and see that has recommended it.

Has anyone else tried it? Does it work? Is it worth the cost?

How much $$ is too much to justify for something that might help me feel better? or might work as poorly as the other 3 less expensive probiotics I've tried?

any other recommendations for less expensive probiotics that you've found to work?

I haven't tried it, but it is the only probiotic my gi recommended it, as it apparently is the only one that has been sufficiently tested.

http://www.vsl3.com/They do have a list of local retailers on their site, but the one I tried didn't have it in stock when I wanted it so I ended up ordering.  They ship pretty quickly.

Hi sarahWhen you say 'it worked' what do you mean? I've taken a probiotic in the past but can't say I noticed a difference. Maybe I didn't give it a chance? Thanks!Trish Tobin(sent from my mobile, please forgive typos)From: <beznadan@...>Sent: Friday, July 02, 2010 7:56 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Probiotic VSL3 I developed a pretty severe intolerance to dairy/casein after a round of antibiotics last spring. I mean that I went from pretty severe GI distress after eating any trace of dairy to being able to eat as much dairy as I please with no ill effects.  I believe it fixed whatever imbalance the antibiotics caused in my system that left me unable to digest dairy (I had no problems with dairy before that particular round of new-to-me antibiotics).  I had a complete physical and a handful of specific tests that the GI ordered, and everything came back completely normal, so she recommended probiotics.  I asked if there were specific brands I should look for, since I had tried some previously, and she mentioned that she had good anecdotal feedback from other patients with the VSL3.  I took one packet a day for about a month.  I don't have any idea how much these would help someone with general intestinal malaise, but they really helped my specific problem.  I didn't notice any improvement when I tried other brands of probiotics prior to the VSL3.

Hope that helps-On Fri, Jul 2, 2010 at 10:08 AM, Trish Tobin <tobintrish@...> wrote:

Thanks for sharing .

In addition to the VSL3 website you can get it on Amazon as well.

on Amazon, the pill form of VSL3 got 5 stars and rave reviews by 10 people and 1

star by one person but only because he had shipping problems. No reviews on

amazon of the powdered version.

I think I'm going to give it a try.

I'll post again after i've tried it for a few weeks and let you all know if it

helps my general celiac " i'm still healing " tiredness and malaise.

Probiotics, in my opinion, work wonderfully and VSL has done wonders for me.

Especially when one needs the " supercharged " effects in balancing one's system

after extreme stress or antibiotics. Well worth the money and I keep some around

all the time.

That being said, I also know that probiotics are " transitory " . You need to

replenish them because they move through you. When in balance they do self

generate, but I like to think I'm encouraging a nice healthy garden inside by

adding some now and again. So what's a cheaper, non dairy solution? I too am

GF/CF (add soy and egg intolerance - yippee skippee). Of course now they sell

expensive yogurts to keep one " regular " but not everyone thinks of the benefits

of the live cultures in sauerkraut. And there are some good local suppliers of

fresh kraut everywhere I look. Some are only $4

I also add l-glutamine to my probiotic regimen when I'm feeling like the gut

needs a boost. Read more about it here:
