I have been hooked on Starbucks mocha frappuchinos for years now. I limit

myself to two a week (yeah, that's probably still too many, but it truly is

something I look forward to on the way to work a couple of times a week).

Since Starbucks changed the frappuchino formula, I have gotten some gastro

problems of late. I think I figured it out - they are using the same containers

to make my drink as the glutened light frappuchino drinks. So, I have been

asking them to please do an extra good rinse on the container before making my

regular mocha frappuchino. That has really helped. I wish I could tell you

that it has totally cleared up the problem, but once in a while I still get a

little gastro problem after drinking my frappuchino.

On vacation, I ordered an ice cream drink, carefully checking that the ingredients were GF. I watched it being made, just to be certain that the right ingredients went in. Afterward, I became very, very ill. I figured out that the blender was used for non-GF drinks -- and it wasn't washed before my drink was made.

This new beverage is not the first Starbucks frappucino to contain gluten- they

had a mocha chip one (i think) that contained gluten, and a few of their

seasonal flavors did too.. (banana) Anyway, it has always been a good idea to

ask them to give your blender an extra wash before blending. Personally, I've

never liked their frappucinos very much so I just stick to their safer espresso

beverages.

The cross-contamination issue probably is one reason for discontinuing the

valencia cakes. Not a problem with manufacturing (I don't think) but some

clueless baristas wanted to unwrap the goodie before giving it to us, which

opened up the possibility of CC and, I suppose, a lawsuit. Really, though, I

think the problem was not enough consistent demand. The valencia cake was

interesting but a little too strongly flavored and didn't appeal to everyone. I

myself am a Starbucks junkie and rarely actually wanted the cake. The dried

fruit snack stuff they have now is far more useful IMO (if boring) and has a

longer shelf life. *shrug*

The gluten-free community has been really active and consistently demanded

Starbucks carry products for us, which is great. I think our voice has been

pretty effectively heard and SB has been trying to accomodate in a way that is

cost effective for them. *shrug* Obviously it could always be better.

Personally I hope they got rid of their stupid viviano gluten chocolate

beverage. That just seemed like a bad idea all around. I haven't noticed it

lately, but I haven't been looking.
