>Starbucks .... the only selections of sugar free syrups that they have

is vanilla and hazelnut(I want peppermint and chocolate) plus after the

surgery ive become lactose intolerant (soy anyone?)...their soy has

lots of sugar and calories. I think if enough of us complain we can

get them to change. hopefully get some sf chocolate.

Here, here! I've complained and wrote emails to their comment line

before about peppermint and chocolate, but no response. I'll send them

another one. Same with lowfat soy. Ditto with Chai -- they do make

Chai syrup in sugar-free, if you want to add that to your requests

(please?). I often bypass Starbucks and go to a small kiosk

competitor, just for this reason. For example, R & R in Woodinville has

a list of about 20 sugar free flavors, including pep and choc. (And

they're a little cheaper than *$, too!).

Here's what the wife does, she heads down to " Cash & Carry " and buys the bottle

of the flavors she likes. Dirt cheap and a large selection of sugar free

flavors.

**Disclamer** Wife works from home 3 days a week so it's easy for her to do.

And that's an idea, too -- carry your bottle-o-sugarfree with you in

the car, and then when you have the urge for a latte-break, you can

just ask them to leave room, and add your own syrup.

Our local Starbucks says they only carry their own brand of syrups...and

they only MAKE vanilla and hazelnut.

I too go to cash & carry and buy my own sugar free syrups for less than $4

a bottle. They have a vast assortment of flavors in many different brands.

I use primarily choc. and hazelnut, but keep root beer, eggnog,

gingerbread, Chia, and various fruit flavors...blueberry is devine in plain

warm milk!!!

http://www.seattlemet.com/blogs/nosh-pit/starbucks-gluten-frapuccino-062310/

I just read this piece on Starbucks it made me start thinking...

Does anyone else get the feeling that Starbucks is not exactly pro-celiac/gluten

intolerant?

How many of you heard about and tried the gluten free Valencia cakes that they

came out with a while ago? Of those of you who tried it or at least heard about

it, where did you hear about it? I found out because I have a Google news alert

that sends me new gluten or celiac related articles every night. Everyone in my

group found out because I told them about it at the very next meeting.

I asked Starbucks recently why they stopped selling the cakes. They said it was

because of cross contamination. That's funny, when they first came out, there

was an article about how they were made in a dedicated facility and the cakes

were sent to the shops wrapped in plastic. One of the employees (and this

article here agrees:

http://celiacdisease.about.com/b/2009/07/16/starbucks-goodbye-gluten-free-orange\

-valencia-cake-hello-yummy-kind-fruit-nut-bars.htm) told me they weren't

selling. Well, what on earth did they expect? They weren't advertising them.

And how many people trying to avoid gluten are going to walk into a Starbucks

after years of them not having anything and ask what is gluten free? How can

they sell something that they didn't effectively tell the gluten free community

to look for? Sure, as the above article points out, they weren't the

healthiest. But I honestly don't believe that was the main reason for their not

selling. I would like to see them try bringing them back with proper

advertising. Let's see what happens to their sales then.

Now Starbucks had added gluten to one of their products and they don't really

seem to care how it affects people with food allergies/intolerance. I believe

if they did, they would advertise that sure, this product has gluten and you

should avoid it. But hey, this product over here doesn't. You should give it a

try!

I would like to propose this: If people who are celiac, gluten intolerant, or

even just avoiding gluten for their own reasons, started requesting more options

from Starbucks, they might get the point. Celiac disease makes up about 1% of

the population and that doesn't even count everyone who is gluten intolerant,

has a wheat allergy or is simply avoiding gluten. General Mills and Anheuser

Busch have recognized the need for gluten free products. It is time that

Starbucks did a better job of recognizing the need for gluten free products.

The more companies start working with us, the better things will keep getting.

Please join me in sending a message to Starbucks by passing this letter along

and contacting Starbucks at

http://www.starbucks.com/customer-service/contact/company-information-form to

request more gluten free products. We want them to know that the Gluten Free

Community makes up a large part of the population and would support them if they

supported us.

Thank you.
