That's funny...because much of that stuff makes me sick. I can no longer have their Mochas or Freddo's without getting a reaction. I often wondered if their chocolate sauces have gluten in them. We certainly can't have any of their caramel stuff. So you might want to double check their sources or contact their vendor's directly. I generally stick to their plain coffee and teas.I had the same thing happen with Chocolate in Emeryville. "Everything is gluten free." Excuse me, really? Even your caramels? Many chocolates have Malt Barley, too. Are you sure? I never heard back from them.Business aren't always up-to-date on their facts, and it's no fun to find out the hard way...like I did with Peet's coffee drinks. Caramel is a no-no hands down. I asked about specific ingredients, beyond wheat, like caramel, malt barley, etc. I never heard back. Louise AudellFrom: Harper <flatcat9@...> Sent: Fri, June 11, 2010 8:32:27 AMSubject: Re: [ ]

Caramel isn't automatically on the no list. In the US it is usually made with corn; and there are some sources that say that even if it's made with barley, there is no gluten in the final product. In any case, I wouldn't automatically reject caramel without first finding out its source, which should be easy enough to do with a local company like Chocolates.

Hi All, Can we refrain from using absolute terms. In my research, I learned the following: Caramel candy is a soft, dense, chewy candy made by boiling a mixture of milk or cream, sugar, butter, vanilla essence, and (more common in commercial production) glucose or corn syrup. I have found that this is the most common recipe when I've checked various caramel recipes from different mftrs. My protocol is that caramel is not off limits, but needs certainty of ingredients before consumption. From: Louise Audell <louise_gd@...> Sent: Fri, June 11, 2010 8:41:23 AMSubject: Re: [ ] Peets & Chocolate

You mention that you have reactions to some drinks at Peets, although they are stated to be GF. Perhaps you're sensitive to other ingredients.

Peet's sells non-GF baked goods. Could you be getting some cross-contamination from that? I can't figure out a likely way for that to happen, certainly not repeatedly, but I guess it's possible.

I don't think that most chocolate contains barley. Check with each manufacturer; some does, but not most.

FYI some Cadbury's and at least one other brand (I forgot which) have wheat syrup in some of their chocolates, so check for that in addition to barley malt.Regarding Peet's I inquired there a couple years ago and got a similar response from someone worked there and was celiac, so if she still works there they probably know what they are talking about... but you never know.

But you don't mean it's a gluten response, just something in the way they roast the beans that is too harsh for you?

Hi Everyone –

I’m just wondering……when a thread mushrooms and there are just a

few who are participating is there a way to take the conversation off line or

off of our group? Thirteen emails in a few hours on the same subject seems

a little excessive and especially when there are more opinions than facts.

Thank you,

Cara

reactions to some drinks at Peets, although they are stated to be GF. Perhaps

you're sensitive to other ingredients.

Peet's sells non-GF baked goods. Could you be getting some cross-contamination

from that? I can't figure out a likely way for that to happen, certainly not

repeatedly, but I guess it's possible.

I don't think that most chocolate contains barley. Check with each

manufacturer; some does, but not most.

That's

funny...because much of that stuff makes me sick. I can no longer have their

Mochas or Freddo's without getting a reaction. I often wondered if their

chocolate sauces have gluten in them. We certainly can't have any of their

caramel stuff. So you might want to double check their sources or contact their

vendor's directly. I generally stick to their plain coffee and teas.

I had the same thing happen with Chocolate in Emeryville.

" Everything is gluten free. " Excuse me, really? Even your caramels?

Many chocolates have Malt Barley, too. Are you sure? I never heard back from

them.

Business aren't always up-to-date on their facts, and it's no fun to find out

the hard way...like I did with Peet's coffee drinks.

Does other coffee, non-Peets, irritate your stomach?

Regarding Peet's I inquired there a couple years ago and got a similar response from someone worked there and was celiac, so if she still works there they probably know what they are talking about... but you never know.

I think this thread is important for people who live in the Bay area, especially if there's the possibility that any given company's treatment of gluten is misrepresented.

Hi Everyone –

I’m just wondering……when a thread mushrooms and there are just a

few who are participating is there a way to take the conversation off line or

off of our group? Thirteen emails in a few hours on the same subject seems

a little excessive and especially when there are more opinions than facts.

Thank you,

Cara

I've heard this from someone who do not have CD or sensitivity to gluten. She can't drink Peet's, but has no problem with Starbucks. Wonder that's about?

FYI some Cadbury's and at least one other brand (I forgot which) have wheat syrup in some of their chocolates, so check for that in addition to barley malt.

Regarding Peet's I inquired there a couple years ago and got a similar response from someone worked there and was celiac, so if she still works there they probably know what they are talking about... but you never know.

At any rate, we've determined that no one has found undisclosed gluten in either Peets drinks or Chocolates candies. That's been my goal: to clarify an earlier statement about this possibility.
