Guest guest
TrVerb puts it well. Chocolates is a reputable local company, and it knows about gluten. I used to receive their products as gifts and I never had a reaction. As for Peets, I would be very surprised if they stated an item was GF and it wasn't. I certainly don't trust every source for everything: This morning I went to a favorite local coffee shop/bakery. The people there are considerate and friendly, and their baked goods look wonderful. They now sell beautiful GF muffins. However, the GF muffins were lined up in a basket, so each one was touching a non-GF muffin! When I asked about cross-contamination, I got a look of well-meaning, non-comprehension. Their first language is not English, and mine is. There was a definite language problem, and finally I dropped the subject. I've heard that the "GF" muffins have been offered in this way for several months, so somebody's buying them. In the US it is usually made with corn; and there are some sources that say that even if it's made with barley, there is no gluten in the final product. In any case, I wouldn't automatically reject caramel without first finding out its source, which should be easy enough to do with a local company like Chocolates. -----Original Message----- From: Harper <flatcat9aol> Sent: Fri, Jun 11, 2010 8:32 am Subject: Re: [ ] Peets & Chocolate Why do you think that Chocolates caramels and chocolates, etc. contain gluten? How did you word your question to them? I can no longer have their Mochas or Freddo's without getting a reaction. I often wondered if their chocolate sauces have gluten in them. We certainly can't have any of their caramel stuff. So you might want to double check their sources or contact their vendor's directly. I generally stick to their plain coffee and teas. I had the same thing happen with Chocolate in Emeryville. "Everything is gluten free." Excuse me, really? Even your caramels? Many chocolates have Malt Barley, too. Are you sure? I never heard back from them. Business aren't always up-to-date on their facts, and it's no fun to find out the hard way...like I did with Peet's coffee drinks.
