The author was in a skiing accident which made her a quadriplegic. Her book is a fantastically written book with short sequences that relate to her life with beautiful pictures. It is worth reading. I also like to read " Chicken Soup for the Soul " books. Helen
Guest guest
Rose I think that is a great idea!!!!! How better to show the world what we are about, and to educate them, then to show people what it's like to walk, or waddle as in my case, in our shoes. I hope a talented writer on this list will feel inspired to take on such a challenge. book recommendation & an idea Yesterday I found myself in Borders with lots of time to kill & a bit of money just itching to be spent on my favorite luxury -- books! After buying a coffee & reading the new People Magazine cover to cover, I wandered around until I found myself at the disabilities issues sections. All 1 and a quarter shelves of it. And those are the little shelves -- not the gi-hugic (a Rose-ism) shelves they give to Fabio-covered romance novels. Hmmph. One of the books that wasn't about Helen Keller (apparantly she's the only disabled person worth writing about) was an anthology called " Staring Back: The Disability Experience From the Inside Out " edited by Kenny Fries. I thumbed through it and the selling point was an excerpt from a play called " P.H.*reaks: The Hidden History of People with Disabilities. " I purchased the book & thus we arrive at my writing to the list. I have only read the first 3 stories in it and already I think it's great. I haven't found if there are any stories by dwarf writers yet or not, but the experiences spoken about so far are ones I can relate to well and I think many others will relate to as well. Just wanted to pass this info on to other book-worms out there. Rose J. ps -- here's a thought. Why can't we as a group produce our own anthology? Perhaps something that could be offered through LPA. Experiences ranging from LPs themselves to the parents of LPs and what it's like for them to have to stand back & watch how the world reacts to their precious child. Discussions from folks who have been life long LPA-ers to those who have never joined. See where I'm going with this? If this is something folks would like to do, let me know!
