I can't stand Judith Reichman, because she's like a broken record about it.

When I read your post I asked myself, who do I know who works for NBC. One

person. He has two children with DS, one without. He and his wife went

through a lot to have children and refused prenatal testing on all

pregnancies, even after having two kids with DS. He would be a super person

to interview to present the other side, so I will definitely write to them.

I totally agree!! Its funny that celebs think it will make the lose weight...

not necessarily the case!! For them it's more of a " fad " diet... for us, it's a

lifetime commitment :)

the interest in this topic came about because of Chelsea Clinton's gluten free

wedding cake and people were curious as to why she had one. I was very impressed

by Dr. Raj's comments and knowledge of Celiac. She definitely dispelled the

thoughts that gluten free 'diets' are not a weight loss kind of diet, but a

necessary change for millions of Americans. Although the fact that so many

celebrities are opting out of gluten is great for us, because it means more

options will be opening up, it is important for people to know this isn't a

choice for so many of us.

I thought she did mention the need for testing before going GF. It was right at the end, according to my memory.

Did anyone catch the M & M’s on the “glutenâ€

side of the table (gluten-free stuff was on one side; gluten-containing stuff

on the other)? Sent me on a quest to find out if something had changed,

since M & M’s are on my safe list. All I could figure out is that

they must have been the crispy kind. Also, there is some talk about the possibility

that the new pretzel variety has caused CC, although Mars says they are making

them on separate lines and only the holiday types would also be run on the

pretzel line.

I do wish the doctor had talked about the need for testing and

why it is important to get tested before going GF. When the host

mentioned going GF and feeling better, that would have been the perfect

time.

I'm pretty sure one of the products from the " Pirate's Booty " line was on the

glutinous side, too.

Last I checked, all of those products are gf, too. I wonder if a food stylist

mixed things up, perhaps.

Thanks for posting this! The doctor did mention very clearly that it was important to get tested for celiac before going gluten free because the test wouldn't be accurate otherwise. I do wish she'd mentioned that for people with celiac, it's not just about cutting out gluten but about avoiding cross contamination -- something we all know is difficult to do when eating out at a restaurant or friend's house. Though the intent of the piece seemed mostly to debate the idea that cutting out gluten is a great weight-loss strategy (or rather, from the doctor's point-of-view, to debunk that idea), not to give out information about celiac disease, I think the doctor did a great job emphasizing that a lot of Americans have this disease and it's very serious. So nice to see on national tv. Celiac disease is mentioned fairly regularly in a lot of mainstream women's magazines, too, like Family Circle and Woman's Day (mags my mom subscribed to). Word is getting out! Now if only more restaurants in SF go the message!

Sent from my tin can and string. Please excuse mumbling and static.
