Guest guest
I think, hands down, the best bread is from Farmer’s Kitchen in . They will ship it to you. If you are looking for something you can get in a store, then Udi’s is your next best bet. Pretty much all the rest (except for perhaps the Whole Foods Sundired tomato bread – at nine dollars a loaf – yikes!) just should not be bothered with, IMO. Guest guest
If you can have eggs then Udi's bread has been my favorite hands down. They are good without having to toast the bread or hide it other ways. My husband and I have been trying to make bread that is as good but so far Udi's wins. > > I'm about to embark on a one month gluten free diet to see if it might help my psoriasis. I love sandwiches. Guest guest
I like all the Whole Foods BakeHouse breads. In defense of its price, the loaf is bigger and heavier than Udi's, with each slice larger. The WF loaf goes farther. I'm delighted to have found Udi's, but WF is heartier, richer in flavor. Guest guest
I second the vote for WF Bakehouse bread. The best I've had. I often try to treat myself to the tomato/garlic/basil loaf. Guest guest
My wife likes the following breads in order:1 (By far) - Those large loaves of "real," "normal," porous bread-like bread that Margaret bakes at Coffee Espresso in downtown Santa Clara. Yes, they are $10, but they're 2.5 pounds and the best-tasting bread my wife has had since she was diagnosed 3 years ago. 2. Another vote for the breads from Farmer's Kitchen in . One note: The mother and daughter there make the most sourdough bread-like GF sourdough bread we have found. We filled our freezer with bread we brought back the last time we were in Sacto.3. Either the GF bread available at TJs in the Pacific Northwest (not here, still) or, reluctantly, Udi's. Guest guest
The best bread I have ever had is from Pele's Oven in Santa Cruz. Joe delivers to both my house and at work on my schedule, hot and fresh. My favorite is his different french bread sticks especially the jalapeno-cheese. It has a crunch and is soft in the center. I use both the mock wheat and sweet panini for sandwiches. Guest guest
I just looked on the Farmer's Kitchen and only see a baguette. Is that the sour dough or is the sour dough something you can only get in the store? Has anyone tried the hot dog buns at the Farmer's Kitchen? My daughter really wants to try a hot dog on a bun like other kids eat and if you've tried the Kinnikinnick or the Ener-G buns you'll know they're not close to the real thing and are pretty much a waste of time. Guest guest
Thanks to all of you for your ideas about bread. Interesting that only one person talks about making bread at home. I gather the rest of you have either tried it and not liked it, or not tried it. I'm tempted to try homemade bread as I enjoy cooking. Harper, thanks for the reminder to consider being tested before changing my diet. What tests would be needed? I don't know that I'm up for a biopsy but blood tests would be fine. I don't know that my HMO will pay for blood tests but I wouldn't mind paying for them if I thought the results could be interpreted correctly and were worth the cost. From the reading I've done it seems that the tests may not be 100% reliable or even close to that. I am a nurse and I believe that most of medicine is truly " practicing " to see what works. Can be pretty expensive during the process and we are the guinea pigs. Have a great weekend!! I've been busy with work plus my computer was on the fritz for a few days so I couldn't get back to you all before now. Guest guest
I'd be extremely surprised if your HMO wouldn't pay for tests, both blood and/or biopsy. Blood tests may give false negatives. Therefore, if one has a negative blood result, it's a good idea to proceed to the biopsy. Although false positives are rare, some doctors believe a biopsy should be done with a positive blood test, too, as eating GF for CD is a life-time, serious undertaking. The biopsy is done by an endoscopy. As a nurse, you probably know that an endoscopic exam isn't difficult for the patient. Occasionally a biopsy gives a false negative. Commonly, GIs do a second endoscopy about six months after the patient goes GF in order to confirm the biopsy and to see whether healing is taking place. Remember that the biopsy examines the esophagus and stomach as well as the upper intestine. People with CD are more prone to certain problems in those areas. I thought the question about "best bread" was asking for purchased breads. Many people here make GF bread. I always mean to do so -- next month. I usually bake a couple of loaves at a time and freeze what I'm not going to eat in the next day or so. Then again, my diet is not very bread based; I mostly have bread for those times, when toast will fulfill my craving or when I really want a sandwich. That reminds me; I should have a baking session soon! --Ruth Anne
Guest guest
As Harper advised, testing is vital. It was to determining that celiac sprue was the true cause of why my wife was so anemic. I hope your HMO is Kaiser, as you may have very little expense in testing or anything else. Except for small co-payments for appointments and medicines (including super-expensive ProCrit and multiple pints of blood for anemia), we paid nothing for all of my wife's multiple diagnostic tests (blood, endoscopies, biopsies, etc.). I am a nurse and I believe that most of medicine is truly "practicing" to see what works. Can be pretty expensive during the process and we are the guinea pigs. Have a great weekend!! I've been busy with work plus my computer was on the fritz for a few days so I couldn't get back to you all before now. Guest guest
I bake bread at home and only buy bread when traveling. I started out standard baking and tried a lot of recipes. In the end, it was too much work to keep up with the baking for myself and 2 children, so I bought a bread machine. My favorite breads are from " Gluten Free baking Classics for the Bread Machine " by Analise . Recently, I have been adding almond meal and ground flax seeds to the dough for protein and fiber (along with additional liquid), and it's also, according to my 7-year old, the best bread I have made. I do this usually once or twice a week. It only takes about 5 minutes to mix the ingredients. To me, it's well worth the effort.
