Guest guest
I would have to agree with this at least in my own circumstance. For awhile there I was starting to wonder if there was something else wrong with me. While I have certainly felt better, and absolutely know the difference of a gluten free lifestyle versus not, I have yet to have that wondrous feeling of well being on a gluten free diet. If I had to admit, in all honesty, there I times when I feel I might be better served with the chronic slow illness symptoms versus what is now a hurricane of pain when glutened. I have no doubt my body is also not near recovery. I am 46, female, and can look back at all the mysterious illness's I had and know it has been a lifetime of gluten intolerance. I have only been GF for 3 years now and while I do feel a little better, can't say it's all worth it. And yes, I do know the extensive diseases I am slowing or preventing; it's what keeps me from my comfort food. It would just feel a little more worth it if I actually felt better. I think for those with long term damage, the repair is equally as long term. And on a very POSITIVE note, I would like to share that in my quest to find another less crowded route home I happened upon Ben Lomand Market which is actually in s Valley. Upon entering the market in the bakery section, there is a WHOLE separate refrigerator right by the front door with nothing but GF foods. Cinnamon buns, pizza dough, bagels, ravioli, cheese filled shells, lemon muffins, chocolate muffins etc! It's the best thing you've seen in the bakery section in a long time! I actually felt loved. Support and enjoy! The article, "Intestinal Damage from Celiac Disease Persists in Adults, Even with Gluten-free Diet," summarizes the 5-years-plus study at the Mayo Clinic originally reported in the February 9, 2010, advance online issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Not good news, but it clarifies for those who are frustrated that their intestinal damage is persisting that they are not alone. "After 5 years on a gluten-free diet, Murray [Mayo's ph A. Murray, M.D.] noted, one in three adults with celiac disease still showed intestinal damage."This sets me to wondering if my wife's rare "gluttened" symptoms (after 3 years on the diet) are not due, at least in part, to villi that have still not completely recovered despite the appearance of having done so in an endoscopy. Guest guest
And there's people like me who still have problems, who have had another endoscopy years after being gluten free that showed the damage completely healed. I guess there's intestinal damage, and then the damage done to the rest of the body and its systems. I've begun to wonder if many of these things will ever go away. They're more diffuse, hard-to-categorize things -- feeling terrible when the weather changes, sinus infections, extreme constipation, aches and pains, fatigue, and now a fibromyalgia diagnosis. How much of this is related to my being a Celiac, I will probably never know. Still, I'm thankful for a forum like this where I can vent! And where I know that people will understand! > > The summer 2010 issue (http://www.celiac.nih.gov/NewsletterSummer10.aspx) of the > NIH.gov's Celiac Disease News just reported, " Recent research supported by the > National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) shows > that for many adults with celiac disease, tissue damage persists after 5 years > of adherence to a gluten-free diet. > > > The article, " Intestinal Damage from Celiac Disease Persists in Adults, Even with > Gluten-free Diet, " summarizes the 5-years-plus study at the Mayo Clinic > originally reported in the February 9, 2010, advance online issue of the > American Journal of Gastroenterology. > > Not good news, but it clarifies for those who are frustrated that their > intestinal damage is persisting that they are not alone.
