Guest guest
Had to pick up Ken at SFO today and thought I would stop in at Zest GF Bakery in San for a GF treat. Besides awesome chocolate raspberry muffins and tasty baguettes, we picked up actual gluten-free, real custard-filled cream puffs. I didn’t think it would be possible to make such a pastry GF, but they were fabulous, so I have to rave about them. They are small (about the size of a large marshmallow) but still everything a cream puff should be. The kids were amazed, never having had anything remotely like them. When I showed them the cream puffs and described what was in them, they just looked confused and doubtful, but after tasting them, they wished we had gotten lots more than we did. It’s a good thing Zest is so far from Santa Cruz since goodies like that can only be an occasional treat for me (have to watch the carbs). It was very nice to know that the treats were celiac-safe and nicer still not to have to ask lots of questions about cross contamination since the bakery is a dedicated GF facility. On another note, Ken is just back from two weeks of international travel. As a seasoned business traveler, he usually doesn’t ask for the GF meals on airplanes, but takes his chances that there will be something he can eat in the regular meals. This time the airline (United) had somehow marked his meals to be gluten-free, and he hated everything and plans to change back to regular meals ASAP. So good news they offer GF meals, but disappointing that in this day when there is so much tasty GF food out there the airlines still can’t offer celiacs something palatable.
