Guest guest
Yes, most cashews are not really raw, because of the toxin issue. However Sunfoodnutrition does carry a " Truly Raw Cashew " http://tinyurl.com/2v5pbz They are from Indonesia and specially processed entirely by hand in such a way that the toxin -- which actually originates on the outside of the shell -- does not come in contact with the nut meat. These were the only cashews the raw foodists I used to hang out with would eat, both because they are truly raw, and because the toxins are not an issue in this case (although I still wouldn't recommend eating too many of them). ~ >>Well, there really are like " no " raw cashews anyways. They are all steamed, even the " Raw " ones. .. <http://geo./serv?s=97359714/grpId=122939/grpspId=1707032824/msgId= 54441/stime=1178374574/nc1=3848443/nc2=4025302/nc3=3>
Guest guest
The oil on cashews is very similar to but not exactly the same as urushiol (poison oak toxin). I can see how working with cashews for a long period of time could expose you to enough of the oil to cause a reaction. I don’t know if the toxin on cashews is as tenacious as poison oak oil, but urushiol from poison oak is one of the most potent oils known; it degrades only in direct sunlight, is insoluble in water, remains toxic for up to 5 years, and a very minute amount can cause a reaction. Processing probably removes all but traces of the oil from the cashews, but that may be enough to cause problems with prolonged exposure. Pity the poor folks who have to harvest and process these tasty devils! -----Original Message-----From: Harper <flatcat9@...> < >Sent: Wed, Jan 12, 2011 3:10 pmSubject: Re: [ ] Re sour cream substitute When using cashews raw, take care. Some people react similarly to raw cashews and poison ivy. I think -- I'm not sure -- that people who have already had a poison ivy reaction might be especially sensitive to raw cashews, and vice versa. I believe that roasting cashews destroys the chemical that causes problems for some people.I was nearly hospitalized after spending a day handling raw cashews in a large food co-op. If the subject is of interest, google rather than depend on my recollections. H. _,_._,___
