Dear and Mely,

On Moringa (locally called Malunggay) in the Philippines, there is a growing

interest on this fast and easy to grow perennial tree crop for food, health &

wellness applications.  And recently had the Moringa leaves analyzed in our

laboratory at PCA  Central Office, Diliman, Quezon City, Metro Manila.  Below

are some relevant data and based from these, it strongly appears the nutrient

content/levels varies, depending on environmental (climate and soil conditions)

and probably the variety grown, also.

macro and secondary nutrients (%):  N = 1.91 - 5.57;  P = 0.22 - 0.38; K = 1.13

-2.48; Ca = 1.48 - 2.39 ; Na = 0.04 - 0.10; Cl = 0.13 - 0.97 ; S - 0.40 - 0.93;

Micronutrients (ppm or mg/kg): iron (Fe) = 66 -128; Zinc; copper (Cu) = 3.1-

6.2; Manganese (Mn) = 5.1 - 98.4; and boron (B) = 16.2 - 55.3;

This indicates or suggests, that there is a need to analyze the leaf elemental

content of moringa leaves of growing area or farm to determine where to source

nutrient (s) of interest.

Hoping this provides you and other members of this forum new knowledge on

nutrient levels of  Moringa oliefera based on our initiative in the Philippines

collected in three locations (Los Baños, Bago-Oshiro, Davao City (southern

Mindanao) and Guinobatan, Albay (Bicol Region).

Regards,

, is this a tea? Is there someplace special to get it? Thanks

for the suggestion.

Hi Dr.Magat,

Thanks for sharing the analysis results. Are the figures on dry basis? Are there

data on fat, carbohydrates and protein content? Types of protein? Types of fats?

Types of carbohydrates? Antioxidant content? I have heard from Dr. Galvez Tan,

former Department of Health Secretary, on radio that moringa beats brocolli on

antioxidant content, but no figures cited. Thanks for whatever further info that

you can share.

Tony,

In the case of PCA laboratory test results, unless stated it is based on dry

basis.

As to your request on other food nutrition data, at the moment I don't have

access on this.

You may wish to try the DOST-FNRI based at DOST Science Community, DOST Main,

Taguig City.

Thanks for appreciating the info I provided earlier to forum members.

Cheers,

Sev Magat.

All Concerned

Sorry, I failed to indicate the Zn content of Moringa leaves in earlier

information provided from my end.  This  ranged from 15.1 - 21.2 ppm (mg/kg dry

matter). Another thing I missed to indicate:  Los Baños is a town in the

province of Laguna (Southern Tagalog region), where the world-known University

of the Philippines-Los Baños is located and adjacent to one of the country's

well conserved Mt Makiling Forest.

Thanks for your kind understanding as sometimes we have  the tendency to forget,

even salient details, being human beings. Nevertheless, this happens normally 1-

5 % of the time.

Cheers,

You ingest dried powder. Some make tea then ingest the powder with it. Some

make sauces with it using vco - follow the sag paneer recipe using the moringa

leaves instead. Availabe from websites and try Indian stores. Alternatively,

many oriental stores including Filipino Stores, carry the fresh/frozen of the

leaves. This i make into a tea and sometimes include in my salad or other

dishes.
