Here's a list of gf favorites compiled by the North Bay celiac organization,

courtesy of Iscol:

Hi North Bay Celiacs members,

The list I compiled of the favorites everyone sent in, along with their

comments, is below, and also attached (in a Word document with formatting).

Enjoy! And send in your reviews and additions. I'll try to keep updating the

list and sending it back out periodically.

Special thanks to all who sent a contribution! Apologies for the inevitable

errors I haven't noticed yet.

[One footnote: I received this note from support group member Nan Giordanengo:

" Please take Mangiamo (in Windsor) off the restaurant list. My husband is no

longer working at the restaurant directly and at this time there is no one

trained to assure the food is gluten free. While my husband was there he was

able to make sure cross-contamination wasn't happening. As always, people should

call ahead before dining at any restaurant if possible and speak with the chef

or manager to see how they react. " I took it off the list. Perhaps if we find a

way to work with Mangiamo's, they will be back on our list one day. They have an

incredible GF menu so we hope so. Thank you for looking out for us, Nan!]

in the list does not guarantee the product or restaurant is safe for you.

Always check product ingredients and contact the company if you are unsure about

specific ingredients or the manufacturing process. Call ahead to restaurants and

work closely with management to lower the risk of hidden gluten ingredients and

cross-contamination.

We get the Greek Salad, lentil soup, french fries (dedicated fryer) and falafel

(GF). They have more GF items, but always check carefully with the staff on the

ingredients. Very clean, informal, nice, accommodating staff and owner.

Healthy, fresh Mexican food, interesting menu. We get the cheese enchiladas,

soft tacos and " bowls. " I think the chips are NOT GF. The owner, Candy, is very

accommodating. Watch out for sauces; I believe mole sauce usually contains

flour. We have also eaten the delicious GF homemade flan, but it sits in the

bakery case below crumbly wheat desserts, so take a good look at it.

Market in Sebastopol, has celiac disease and is very enthusiastic about telling

you which sausage, bacon, etc. is GF.

Can request that your local store carry items from their GF list. Right now,

they don’t carry a great deal of their GF items. Perhaps more requests will help

bring that about.

Six locations in the North Bay (Sebastopol, San , Petaluma, Santa ,

Sonoma, Mill Valley.)

Large selection of gluten-free products. Their list of GF products is on their

web site, though difficult to find. Try entering “gluten-free list” into their

site search box. Customer Service in the stores sometimes has it. They will

special order, but with more difficulty than the smaller, local stores, and

sometimes require that you buy a case. Watch out for bulk items from bins that

can be cross-contaminated. The ones that dispense in a one-way chute are safer.

Whole Foods carries their fresh Gluten-Free Bakehouse brand from a dedicated

facility on the east coast. Due perhaps to the distance, the quality doesn’t

always match the high prices, but we love the Chocolate Chip Cookies. Some

roasted chickens are GF some are NOT, check label.
