Guest guest
Jody, I just had another idea: if you wanted to follow this up, consider testing the product for gluten.  The ELISA test ($25 for 2 tests) tests down to 10 PPM gluten. It would be very interesting to see what the buckwheat flour tests at, especially if it is labeled gluten-free. Guest guest
Actually, Bobs Red Mill Buckwheat Flour, is just as you mentioned, no special labeling that says GF... I've had whole buckwheat cooked as Kasha before, though many years ago, and didn't like it. Don't think I'll give it the test since I'll never eat it again, but that is good to know for other things I might want tested for purity. So now the big question is, what do we do when we are glutened... Gastroenterologist? GP? Wait it out? Added pain in left side under ribs around to back is a new one for me. Went to the allergist yesterday, but today I think I'll call my GP or as he recommended the Gastroenterologist. From: Pam Newbury <pknewbury@...> Sent: Thu, October 28, 2010 10:16:18 PMSubject: [ ] buckwheat allergy Jody, I’m just curious. Did the package say gluten-free or have the GF logo on it? It’s a bummer you reacted both ways. It’s interesting you had an allergic reaction to the buckwheat since it sounds like you haven’t eaten buckwheat before. If you search Bob’s Red Mill and buckwheat, you will see several references to their difficulties finding a source of buckwheat. I think they flipped back and forth a couple of times before giving up and taking off the GF label until they feel they can find a reliable source. Arrowhead Mills doesn’t seem to have this problem (…yet). I don’t know if the problem is isolated or more widespread. I wanted to look into this further, but haven’t had a chance. About the sprays, it’s the same message: some are, some aren’t, and you have to check with the manufacturer or a reliable list to know the difference. It was Bob's Red Mill and so I think I had both an allergy to buckwheat (hives) and a gluten reaction with the possible wheat contamination (spasms, pain, abdominal distress). I used earth balance to butter the pans, but good to know to avoid most sprays. Many thanks for the helpful info, Jodi
