Looking on The Google Map, I only see a few options; I’m not interested in raw or vegetarian food, and the only others on the map are pizza places. Pizza’s OK, but I’ll be feeding two hungry teenage boys, and that can get expensive with those tiny GF crusts. Anyone have any experience at Extreme Pizza, Café Rustica, or Bobby G’s Pizza? I’d appreciate any comments on their cross contamination containment, pizza crust, price, or just how good the pizza is. Anyone have any suggestions for other sit-down restaurants in the area? Guest guest
I recommend Rustica. Great selection of pizzas. They take care to be sure to avoid CC. About $20-30 for GF pizza. They have other menu items like rotisserie chicken....and GF Mariposa bownies for dessert. Guest guest
Zachary's (on Solano) has gluten free crusts now too. I eat at Picante's (4th & Gilman) and Cactus (Solano) fairly often too. There is a place just down from Bobby G's that has papusas of rice or corn, I have eaten there many times. I also frequent Bobby G's but its not cheap. I have had a couple of extreme pizzas delivered and they were good. There is an inexpensive Pakistani/Indian place near Safeway on Solano that I also eat at. Ajanta near the top of the Solano is great\ but not inexpensive. I might be less sensitive than some other folks to CC please do some asking at these places to see if they meet your needs or not. -Luther On Fri, Jan 28, 2011 at 2:37 PM, Pam Newbury <pknewbury@...> wrote: We are heading north to Berkeley on Sunday and need to eat dinner there. Guest guest
I ate at an Ethiopian restaurant on Telegraph Ave right next to Fondue Freds. The owner seemed knowledgeable about avoiding gluten and steered me to the dishes that were okay to eat. Because I went there with a very vegetarian friend, I only inquired about the vegetarian dishes. There was only one that I could not have so I ordered a vegetarian combination without that one. Also, I could not have the injera (ethiopian bread) because the teff was mixed with wheat flour. The food was so delicious, that I didn't mind eating it without the injera and have wanted to go back ever since. Does anyone know of any Ethiopian restaurants in the Berkeley / Oakland area that make their injera without any wheat or other gluten containing flour? It would be great to be able to eat the bread too and I know that some people make it gluten free, I just don't know where to find it. Guest guest
Ethiopia Restaurant on Telegraph at Ashby makes their injera with only teff flour. It was pretty tasty! I liked their veggie options. http://www.yelp.com/biz/ethiopia-restaurant-berkeleyFrom: Dany <miscetc01@...> Sent: Fri, January 28, 2011 11:52:03 PMSubject: Re: [ ] Restaurants around Berkeley I ate at an Ethiopian restaurant on Telegraph Ave right next to Fondue Freds. Guest guest
Cafe Eritrea de Afrique on Telegraph in Oakland (near 40th) uses only teff and I think sorghum in their injera, and the food is really great. .. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dany Sent: Friday, January 28, 2011 11:52 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Restaurants around Berkeley I ate at an Ethiopian restaurant on Telegraph Ave right next to Fondue Freds. Guest guest
Highly recommend spice monkey. The chef/wife of the husband and wife team is extremely knowledgeable. Food is excellent too. Most items can be made GF. Never had a problem.
