I have been taking whey 2 to 4 times a day and am very happy with it.

However, I read a web page earlier which wans diabetic against foods

with high glutamate content. Brief exerpts below plus URL at end to

the page.

I'd sure appreciate your thoughts about this, Duncan.

an excess of glutamate, which the body has trouble converting because

the immune system is attacking the very mechanism the body uses to

metabolize excess glutamate. These people already have an excess of

an amino acid the body can make - they do not need additional free

glutamate in their diet.

This study alone makes free glutamic acid's role in diseases like

Diabetes extremely relevant to the overuse of MSG and free glutamic

acid in our food.

Since cardiovascular disease is a problem for those with diabetes, it

would be wise to avoid any blood vessel constricting foods containing

the free amino acids -Tyrosine, Tyramine and Glutamate

Last month I posted a question for Duncan to this list. When he never

responded, I figured he was too busy with his new relationship. So I

write to him off-list.

He wrote me back. I then asked Duncan if it would be OK for me to

post his reply to the list. He gave me the go-ahead. Below is his

e-mail ansering my question.

Yes, I'm in a very loving relationship with a younger and energetic

woman (good thing I've been anti-aging for a few years ;) so I scan

the lists pretty fast these days. Thanks for the mail though; I always

make time for direct contact.

About 2 pounds of glutamate are processed by the body every day

anyway, so for most people a little more in the food is not a problem.

People tend to spark too much at the exceptions to rules; I think this

is one of those times. The text is talking about excess without

mentioning the scale that involves the 2 pounds already being

processed; it only applies to an excessive condition.

Also, the writer is confusing glutamate and glutamic acid. Glutamic

acid is the major fatty acid in human milk, and somewhat less (but

still high) in cow whey. Whey is not an issue even with diabetics who

have trouble clearing glutamate, so there goes the writer's argument

about glutamate being the same as glutamic acid. Glutamic acid isn't

free-form anyway :) as glutamine would be the free-form. Amino acids

are not naturally found in free form.

all the best,

Duncan
