The thing is, I've modified the hell out of my diet in the last 10 yrs, and when I walk by the meat aisle, I can hardly stand the smell of fresh meats. Sardines, canned, I maybe eat once per month. shellfish maybe once per 2 months. My 80 yo bro and his wife 83 yo eat fresh steamed salmon 3 -4 times per week. But, I think of fish as cat food. My gut likes veggies, fruit, rice, corn, immature beans, and when in season, raw oysters.

I guess the answer is fish oil capsules.

Regards.

Hi Jw:As to fish, I eat about 100g most days (not that that means anything). It is important to eat a variety of fish. People can have allergic reactions if they repeatedly eat the same fish (it happened to me once). For reference, I read somewhere that the world's most prolific fish eaters, the japanese, eat on average ~200g per day. That seems to be enough to fix any heart problems they might otherwise have had.Rodney.On the subject of flexitarians, I guess the overwhelming majority of the world's population qualifies for that designation.> Alan, I think you're right, because there may be another advantage to fish, in that the aspirin and plavix have side effects. I don't like either one, although aspirin bothers me the least. I also don't think I can eat fish every day. How many cans of sardines do I need per week, in your opinion? > > Regards.> ----- Original Message ----- > From: old542000 > > Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 7:08 PM> Subject: [ ] FLEXITARIANS Vegetarians who eat meat> > > Hi All,> > A new concept to me is:> > FLEXITARIANS Vegetarians who eat meat> Number of part-time vegetarians is growing. > > http://edition.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/diet.fitness/03/18/flexitarians.ap/> index.html> > Me, I take fish, 70 g fatty fish, daily.> > Cheers, Al Pater.

Correct, but as I recall they didn't know what the benefit was caused by. It's probably not the oil, because most people don;t eat the skin.

Remember that vegetarians are supposed to get benefits. One benefit is they don't have to say "rare".

Actually, I think there may be an amino acid in animals that we need. It'd be nice if in 2005 they can figure out what it is (and tell us). Maybe it's hydroxyproline?

My family didn't have heart probs, at least before 80. My bro has congestive heart failure, but he still does design work at 80.

Oddly, he never had hypertension. Always fit until the arrhythmia.

Regards.

Hi Jw:You might want to check out the Physicians Health Study regarding fish oil capsules. My recollection is that they studied this carefully and found no benefit (nor harm). So I have tentatively concluded that the benefit from fish is not in the fat they contain.Rodney.> The thing is, I've modified the hell out of my diet in the last 10 yrs, and when I walk by the meat aisle, I can hardly stand the smell of fresh meats. Nutritional and herbal supplements may have harmful or beneficial effects on

arrhythmias. Potential supplements that may have antiarrhythmic activity

include omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (N-3 PUFA), coenzyme Q10, and

carnitine. Clinical studies show that N-3 PUFA or fish oil supplementation

appears to reduce mortality and sudden death. Coenzyme Q10, used in

treatment of heart failure, and carnitine and its derivatives may have

beneficial effects on arrhythmias, although clinical studies have been

limited. Antioxidant supplements may be beneficial, but large studies with

vitamin E have been disappointing in that it does not reduce mortality.

Correction of electrolyte disturbances has been long advised and magnesium

supplementation has been beneficial in the treatment of torsades de pointes

and in some studies after cardiac surgery. However, routine electrolyte

supplementation with empiric potassium or magnesium in non-deficient

patients has not been convincingly beneficial. Several herbal supplements

have also been promoted to have antiarrhythmic activity. However, clinical

studies are lacking to support routine use of these herbal medications. In

addition, some herbal supplements may cause serious proarrhythmia, and many

supplements significantly interact with warfarin and digoxin.

Thanks, Alan, The things I have against fish is the mercury of course, but also tyramines. I heard there was a thing they would require producers to label can content, but not yet.

Regards.

Hi All,A serving/week should be good for many risk reductions, I believe,Cheers, Al Pater.> Alan, I think you're right, because there may be another advantage to fish, in that the aspirin and plavix have side effects.
