Hi Bernadette:

When the new 'Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating' was released

some years ago, and recommended that the average person eat eight of

this, ten of that, five of something else and three servings of

whatever (and they gave precise examples of what constituted 'a

serving' in each case) .......... I got the data out of Bowes and

Church's and added up how many calories it all came to. It was over

3000 calories a day - for an average person.

I called the local Weight Watchers branch to ask if they thought that

number of calories was good advice.

The person I spoke to said, as close to verbatim as I can render

it: " In our experience no one leading a normal daily life needs more

than 2000 calories. Some can make do quite nicely on 1200 " .

The difference, 3050 minus, say, 1600, amounts to putting on weight

at a rate well in excess of 100 pounds a year. I communicated this

info to the government department concerned more than once. From the

response it was quite clear they couldn't care less to listen unless

I was complimenting them on their wonderful efforts. One of them

said: " You have to eat that much to get all the nutrients you

need " . I answered " so it is your opinion that in order to be healthy

one has to weigh as much as three elephants? " I got no reply. And

nothing has ever been changed since.

Rodney.
