Why do calorie restricted mice live longer?

There is an interesting question associated with Rodney's question that

has interest to me. While I am certainly no expert, not even in the

practical sense, I am still trying to get my weight down to non-obese

levels, and with the 15 lbs I have lost I probably now am just over

weight but not obese.

Why do calorie restricted mice live longer?

The short answer is we do not know.

I see three possibilities.

1. Lower body weight is causing the life extension.

2. Lower Body fat is causing the life extension.

3. Lower calories (independent of 1 and 2) are causing the life extension.

What is the cause and what is the effect?

It seems that one needs a balance between CR and ON. Can one at below

1800 calories (for a man) achieve ON?

if the main benefit of CR is that we metabolize less Calories and this

leads to life extension what conclusions can we draw?

For example is 1800 a day for 7 days the same as 2520 calories a day for

5 days with two days of fasting? Or 2150 for 6 days? Or is three meals

at 600 each better? Or a 200, 200, 1400 dinner? My intuition says that

periodic fasting would be better CR and better ON and allow more variety

in the Diet. This was what the Dr. did, anyway before his illness.

Why did the mice fed once a day live longer? Should this be extended to

humans? I doubt that humans ever grazed in quite the way that modern

nutritionists seem to want us too.

Just talking out loud here. These are questions that have come up before

on the list and I guess the idea I wish to see some imput on is:
