Glad you posted on this topic. They had a cardiologist on the Today show that said that Atkins weight was around 190 when he fell and hit his head, putting him in a coma and into the hospital. He said it is theoretically possibly for him to have had that kind of edema. As someone who had severe preeclampsia with my first pregnancy, I can testify to the enormous amounts of water weight that can happen to a body in crisis as mine was. I gained more than 40 lbs of water weight in a bedridden status with iv's and no sodium in intensive care at age 22. This was in about 40 days time. Atkins was even sicker than this and much older. PCRM people who are unethically going about their business of discrediting anyone who eats meat will be found out for what they are doing and indeed that is starting to come to the fore. I have known for awhile who this purported "medical" group is, and I wouldn't touch them with a fork. If anyone is in the NW, I was interviewed on CRON for KGW and it will be on TV tonight. Strickland did a great job. It can be see on channel 8 and also on the NW cable channel. kim
Guest guest
Why is the no sugar, no white flour, better protein, better fats nutrition plan called the "diet du jour"? This is the base of the low simple sugar/starch carbs, non-processed food movement. It started more than 30 yrs ago, a whole generation ago. The fact that it has been re-discovered...does not take away from the fact that it does have benefits for many. The thing is....most of us who do CRON are not eating a lot of poor quality, simple sugar/ starch; we are eating more whole foods, we are not eating sugar or white flour. The average obese American eats 100's of processed, poor quality carbs and saturated fats every day. We do not eat that way. Yet I consider myself an adherent to a low to no simple carbs, higher quality carb and higher quality protein and fats plan. JR is right...one man's illness in the later days of his life, after a severe accident, does not constitute a negation of his life's work in the area of cardiology. My understanding is that his cardiomyopathy was a problem most of his adult life and he believed he extended his life by eating this way. Had he not had this accident on an icy street we might have been able to see that borne out.

To gain 60 pounds in 8 days? this does seem unlikely, but in the other hand his admission weight is listed on the form at 195. I saw him on Larry King the previous year and he was not obese. positive Dennis

Guest guest
6 foot tall, 195 lbs = BMI 26.4- not obese, merely overweight. >From: Dennis De Jarnette <positivedennis@...> >Reply- > >Subject: Re: [ ] Atkins (again) >Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 10:18:37 -0600 > > > >Francesca Skelton wrote: > > > The debate between the Atkins people and the group questioning his >weight > > and health (the group is supposedly a front for PETA) is really getting > > ludicrous. Guest guest
Hi : What an interesting point! I don't know what IV solution contains, but if I had to guess I would think it is water, sugar and electrolytes? I.E. water and carbohydrates!!! So Atkins, in hospital in a coma with IV feeding, was going through 'high fat withdrawal' rehydration/weight gain? Rodney. > It's all that " water weight " one loses on the low carb diet! Guest guest
Depends upon the IV solution for the situation. D5W has 5% dextrose (sugar). >From: " Rodney " <perspect1111@...> >Reply- > >Subject: [ ] Re: Atkins (again) >Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 00:02:23 -0000 > >Hi : > >What an interesting point! > >I don't know what IV solution contains, but if I had to guess I would >think it is water, sugar and electrolytes? > >I.E. water and carbohydrates!!! > >So Atkins, in hospital in a coma with IV feeding, was going >through 'high fat withdrawal' rehydration/weight gain? > >Rodney. > > > > > It's all that " water weight " one loses on the low carb diet!
