Guest guest
One of our members has suggested to me a new poll on what helps members for better sleep (if you are middle aged and older and prone to insomnia). Suggested responses might be: rarely have trouble sleeping/doesn't apply sleeping pills melatonin exercise; foods, like warm milk containing tryptophan meditation Or other responses that any members would like to see added to the poll. DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS. WE WILL DO THAT WHEN THE POLL IS TAKEN. ANSWERING THE POLL WILL BE SIMPLE AND DIRECTIONS WILL BE GIVEN WHEN THE POLL OPENS. For now, please suggest any additional responses that you think should be added to the list of responses above.

Guest guest
Hi folks: As I see it there are separate sleep issues which may have different causes/solution. Here are the two I am aware of. There may be more. A) There is taking a long time getting to sleep after going to bed. I only rarely have this problem. 's solutions seem well tailored for this version. But there is going to sleep quickly at 11:00 pm and then waking up at ~4:00 am and not being able to get back to sleep. It is this latter version that, it seems to me, is a major issue for many older folks. But perhaps this is just my perception. Guest guest
Excellent, Francesca. Rodney's suggestion to add tapes to the list might make the list more general. Guest guest
1. Night owl 2. Whenever I finally get too tired to stay awake any longer usually. 3. Usually between 6 and 8. On bad days like today I will easily sleep 12 or more, but days like that are rare. 4. I tend to go to sleep later and later is left to my own devices. This can be lengthened depending on how interesting the nighttime programs are. That means if there are several interesting shows on at the same time, I will stay up to watch the repeat of the others later at night. 5. It usually takes me a long time to get to sleep. I believe this developed from military school where the days were so full and scheduled that bedtime was the only time I really had time to think about things. 6. Most of the time I sleep soundly. However, waking me by surprise can be dangerous. Waking suddenly usually puts me in a kind of defensive autopilot mode and I have been known to lunge at people before catching myself. 7. This varies, most of the time it won't take long to get up and running. Days like today I never get fully charged. If awakened suddenly, I can be at full speed instantly, but as soon as there is no threat, I can often go back to sleep. 8. My sleep patterns have been pretty consistent. 9. Sometimes I remember bits and pieces. Mostly it depends on how powerful the dreams were and if I have time to think about them when I wake up. If I wake and have to get moving right away I won't remember them. 10. All of the above. Most of my dreams are so real that I don't realize I am dreaming. They are in color and have sound and touch when required, but usually there is no smell since my sense of smell is weak anyway. I've not had flying dreams for a while, and no prophetic dreams either. Most prophetic visions have come while I was awake anyway.

Guest guest
1. I am a night owl? 2. When do you prefer to go to bed if you can choose? Two in the morning. 3. How many hours on average do you need to sleep? I get four but prefer 6 or 7. 4. When free to follow your own natural rhythm a) do you tend to go to sleep later and later every day? No. Same time each day. do you get tired around the same time every night/day? Yes. c) is your sleep irregular with varying periods of tiredness? Yes, depending on the time of year. I tend to want to stay up later on summer nights and sit outside around two or three in the morning when it is perfectly quiet. 5. When you're tired a) do you fall asleep easily? Yes. does it take a long time to go to sleep? I can do it in two to three minutes if I NEEd to but I fall asleep within ten to fifteen minutes if I let sleep happen naturally. 6. Do you a) sleep soundly once you're alseep? Yes. tend to easily awaken during the night? Only if there are unexpected noises. Crickets don't both me, but cars racing down the street or thunder or do. 7. Does it take long for you to become fully awake after you start waking up? I have degrees of wakefulness. From the bed until after the shower and shave I am on auto-pilot. Then I lie in bed for about twenty minutes and really DO wake-up. Next I get dressed, and by the time I am out the door I am awake. When I drive, I leave home behind and begin getting in " work mode. " On the walk from the parking garage to the office I am prepared for work. When I enter the office, I am on auto-pilot again as I make the coffee and get things ready for everyone. And by the time I sit at my desk, turn on the computer, and pick up the phone to check voice mail messages, I am totally awake. 8. Has your sleep pattern varied with on season, age or other circumstance? I want to stay up later during the summers. I sleep better now than I did when I was younger. 9. Do you remember your dreams? Always, and I usually think about them as I shower in the morning, but I forget the less vivid ones by the time I am done showering. 10. Have you had a) lucid dreams (when you know you're dreaming) flying dreams c) prophetic dreams (that came true) Yes to all three.
