Chris: I love herring. Where/how do you get it? The jarred variety has

corn syrup added (herring in wine sauce). Otherwise I don't see it

anywhere.

At my local grocery store several varieties are available: kippered, in

mustard sauce, in tomato-basil sauce, etc. I usually get the straight

kippered or tomato-basil sauce as they are usually those with the least

added sugars, etc.

For convenience, I get the canned/tinned varieties. Depending upon your

local markets, you might be able to get some fresh.

Kippers are herring; a ish friend liked them for breakfast. I don't know if they are smoked or how they might be prepared, though I'd take a careful look at the salt content. - Ruth

Nutritional info from my tin of kippered herring, Brunswick brand:

Ingredients: Herring fillets, water, salt, natural smoke flavoring, sodium

phosphate.

Nutrition Facts: Serving size 1 can, drained 90g, calories 160, calories

from fat 80

Total fat 9g, saturated 2g

Carb 0g

Fiber 0g

Protein 18g

Cholesterol 55 mg

Sodium 490 mg

True: it appears salt content is high. I don't know if some of the other

preparations (lemon, tomato-pesto, etc) might have lower salt/sodium, if

that is a concern. Perhaps washing them might help reduce the sodium

content somewhat.

Hi Herring Eaters:

Ingredients from my can of 425 g of 'Brunswick' brand of Herring in

Tomato Sauce (the best value fish I can find @ $1.69

canadian): " herring, water, tomato paste, modified food starch,

salt, citric acid, xanthan gum, natural flavouring " .

I wouldn't want to go overboard with anything smoked, so I prefer

this - with the tomato and without the smoke. The only canned

oysters I have been able to find are smoked. So I am fixing my zinc

deficiency with a supplement, at least for now.

Rodney.
