Little kids need some protection especially since we have, after all, destroyed the ozone layer. I still do think some sun *is* healthy- even still. The sun is not the main thing people should be concerned about who want to avoid cancer- it is so crazy, you know?? Our culture wants to not smell but pollute the body, not get disease yet poison ourselves with fake foods...etc, etc....it's so upside down. I say sweat, eat real food, get some sun, and be healthy...and happy! DO avoid using expressed citrus essential oils before going into the sun btw as they can magnify the sun and cause a sever burn. Bergamot is especially photo sensitizing. Anything I make for the body and face that contains these oils mostly contains the safest and lowest concentrations and either includes a warning or is so minute in the formula that it is not a risk factor. Both Dr. Hauschka and Lavera make a nice variety of sunscreens for babies, kids and adults. None of these are waterproof and all allow for some sun (which is healthy) while caring for the skin naturally. They are extraordinary in terms of ingredients though. It is nearly impossible to find a sunscreen(or anything else you would use on your body) that is non toxic on the market- even in the " health " foods stores. Grrrrr.... I buy them for my son because he is whiter than white (see his pics on my website) and needs some protection. They are worth the price for my baby! Of course you could begin by infusing some of the herbs in oil to use on the body and in the kitchen. You could use olive oil and infuse individual or combinations- oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage. These are also nice to infuse in vinegar for salads. I LOVE Yarrow!! Do you have the type of Tansy? How old are the Echinacea plants- the roots should be at least a couple of years old before pulling them up. If it is old enough it will be nice to tincture and use some in a balm. What kind of roses? I would dry the rose buds. I'd love some of your fresh garlic! Rosemary is nice infused in oil and used as a body oil. Very refreshing in the bath! Catmint is really nice stuff and keeps the insects away, Make tons of pesto with the parsley and cilantro or mint, olive oil and garlic. Cilantro is very medicinal- you can use it in pesto, salads, roasting, etc or you can also make a tincture and use it this way as a remedy. Lemon balm is *wonderful* to infuse in oil. Great dried and used in a bath tea! Chaste Tree- I'd use it in a women's hormonal tea. Perhaps in a nice bath tea too. The lavender is so lovely in bundles, dried and tied with a ribbon- of course nice in a bath tea or sachet too. Oh! The possibilities are endless! Whole Life Essentials. Guest guest
I just wanted to pop into the convo here and say that vitamin D is best absorbed through the skin from natural sunlight. Make sure you get 10-15 mins of sun exposure 3x a week with no sunscreens. Some research suggests that Vit D defficiency may be causing more melanoma cases than over exposure to the sun.
