Guest guest
Had seen a previous post on Wal-Mart selling coconut oil. Checked locally & sure enough, they were. Bought some, took it home & read the label. It says: " 100% Pure All Natural " , " Non Hydrogenated " , " 0g Trans Fat per serving " , and " Ingredient: Coconut Oil " . Called the 800 number & asked the following questions which are followed by the answers recieved: 1. Is the coconut oil organic? No. 2. Is the coconut oil virgin? No. 3. Is it extra virgin? No. 4. What % of MCTs does it have? 48%. 5. Is it hexane free? Yes. Furthermore, the rep stated that " it is processed, once we recieve it via rail or tanker, it is refined, bleached & deodorized. " (Are we talking chemically bleached/deodorized? And what would honest coconut oil need to be deodorized for? They call this " natural " ?) Hmm, doesn't sound quite up to snuff compared to the brands/products that I've heard touted here. Think I'll take it back & invest in higher quality! Wonder what it would take to get Wal-Mart to carry a better brand? Wonder if LouAna makes a " top drawer " product? Anyway, just thought to share the info. \ -richard- ;-{)
Guest guest
LouAna coconut oil is RBD made from copra. Copra tends to be moldy. So it gets processed with Hexane, then bleached and deodorized to remove smell and taste of mold. Supposedly RBD oil has had all the Hexane removed, but there is now way to tell for sure. I stay away from oil extracted with Hexane. Internet is a far better place to buy coconut oil at better prices than health food stores sell it. Guest guest
I called them two years ago and was told they used hexane, and was steamed later on. They use COPRAm, yikes.
Guest guest
I have been told by email friends that some Wal Marts carry a higher quality coconut oil in their health food section near the pharmacy. The LuAna at my Wal Mart is in the aisle with the Crisco.
