Any web references to the relationship to prostate cancer?

Hi Dennis:

Not that I am aware of. I got that information by email directly

from one of the investigators at the Physicians Health Study.

As close to verbatim as possible it said: " .......... there are now

several studies which show a link between high intake of alpha-

linolenic acid, or high blood levels of it, and prostate cancer " . He

then went on to say that they wondered if it might be related to the

animal products that contain it, but they didn't yet know.

This is the reason why, if I am using an oil of some kind, I usually

use safflower oil which contains negligible quantities of it. Canola

oil and soybean oil contain considerable quantities.

Just a further note on this. Since prostate cancer is a very common

disease in north America (very nearly as common as breast cancer in

both new diagnoses and deaths) I am disinclined to do anything that

may increase my susceptibility to it.

Hi All,

Alpha-linolenic acid has many pluses.

Further:

We comprehensively reviewed published studies on the association

between alpha-linolenic acid and the risk of prostate cancer using

MEDLINE. RESULTS: A number of studies have shown a positive

association between dietary, plasma or red blood cell levels of alpha-

linolenic acid and prostate cancer. Other studies have demonstrated

either no association or a negative association. The limitations of

these studies include the assumption that dietary or plasma alpha-

linolenic acid levels are positively associated with prostate tissue

alpha-linolenic acid levels, and measurement errors of dietary,

plasma and red blood cell alpha-linolenic acid levels. CONCLUSIONS:

More research is needed in this area before it can be concluded that

there is an association between alpha-linolenic acid and prostate

cancer.
