What about grape juice? I have started drinking about 17 oz every morning with no food. I don't eat after 7 or 8 p.m. and then don't eat until after noon the following day - just the grape juice. Then I eat from noonish-7ish. I read somewhere on the net this was supposed to cure cancer ;) (Not saying I buy that) but thought it sounded like it might be healthy. Any comments? Also, is Welches 100% grape okay or should I find organic?

Subject: [ ] Alcohol and Mortality

Hi folks:Yet another study on this topic. This one shows a HUGE 44% reduction in mortality for those drinking alcohol daily in comparison with abstainers. Note also that the benefits are not restricted to heart disease. Does anyone know of any other addition to the diet that can have a more profound impact than this? (Apart from the 80% reduction '60 year old' fruit flies enjoy from CR - without the 'ON'. CR, of course, is a 'subtraction from the diet'!) If so, I am waiting here, all ears, to hear what other additions I should be making.http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4232 & nl=4http://snipurl.com/5ekwRodney.

Hi Jody:

Since you ask ...... I don't doubt the studies are now being done

to include grape juice. So far as I know there are no studies yet

published. But a major danish study (Danish Epidemiological Science

Centre) found benefits only for wine (not beer or liquor), and came

up with even larger reductions in mortality from wine drinking than

those in this most recent study. (Beer was basicly neutral, and

liquor not a problem at low levels but a dramatically escalating

problem at higher levels of intake).

Since you ask, I would not use juice from north american type

grapes. A prof at an agriculturally focussed university told me that

north american species grapes contain many more mutagens than

european type grapes (concord, niagara, etc).

[Not an expert here, but as I understand it not all mutagens cause

cancer, but all carcinogens are also mutagenic. It is very easy to

determine if something is mutagenic, but a very long, complicated and

expensive process to determine if something causes cancer in humans.

So we know much more about what is or is not mutagenic, than we do

about whether they cause cancer or not. But it seems like a good

idea (to me at least) to avoid mutagens when possible].

As I said, I am not an expert on this.

Since the effects are different for beer, wine and liquor it suggests

it is not the alcohol. But all kinds of interesting molecules are

formed during fermentation besides the alcohol. You could try de-

alcoholized wine. But it does contain small amounts of alcohol (half

a percent perhaps). I drink the wine! Hic! ; ^ )))

I think the benefits of alcoholic beverages (such as wine) have been found

to be different from and, in some ways superior to, that of fruit juices.

Probably each has its own unique and important beneficial effect, but I

would assume one could take the place of the other.

Whoops! I meant to say I would NOT assume one could take the place of the

other. To wit:

" The fermentation process extracts resveratrol from the skin of a red or

purple grape and then it is kept from spoilage in a nitrogen-flushed bottle.

The air doesn't get to the resveratrol in a bottle of wine so it can't

oxidize. Grape skins provide resveratrol, but not in an extracted form. Due

to processing, grape juice provides little resveratrol. Sun-dried raisins

also contain no resveratrol due to oxidation by sun rays. The same is true

for resveratrol pills which are widely marketed. Their resveratrol content,

extracted from the Giant Knotweed plant (also called fo-ti in Asian

cultures) for use in dietary supplements, is nil. Sinclair has tested a

number of brands of resveratrol pills and their resveratrol content was

zero. The resveratrol disappears soon after exposure to air during

encapsulation. For now, red wine is the only reliable source of resveratrol.

White wine has ten times less resveratrol "
