Thanks Francesca -- That article on Walnuts was good!

----------------

FDA to Allow Claim of Health Benefits for Walnuts.

Note that *CALORIES* is specifically mentioned in

the claim that the FDA allowed, which is a giant step

forward to recognize that:

LIMITING CALORIC INTAKE IS IMPORTANT TO HEALTH

****** The FDA says it's so *******

The new label approved for whole and chopped walnuts will read:

" Supportive but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 oz.

of walnuts per day, as part of a low saturated fat and low

cholesterol diet, and not resulting in increased caloric intake,

may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. "

The FDA acted on a petition from the California Walnut

Commission, which had proposed a label that would have read,

" Diets including walnuts can reduce the risk of heart disease. "

They based their petition on studies showing that eating walnuts

could help reduce the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or

" bad " cholesterol, in the blood.

Although the FDA will allow the qualified health claim, it told

the Walnut Commission in its approval letter: " After reviewing

the scientific evidence in your petition, FDA concludes that

there is very limited and preliminary scientific evidence

supporting the relationship between consumption of walnuts " and

reducing coronary heart disease.
