Guest guest
There are two version of this here. Some as Dr Roy did fast for one or two days a week, (Although I do not know what he did as his illness progressed). Others do semi-fasting by eating one meal a day with an occasional snack. I am considering combining the two in some way, but first I continue my weight loss in preparation of surgery in a month or two. I have moved from Obese to merely overweight and need to lose another 20 lbs to get to surgery weight. But it wasn't mentioned in today's Washington Post article, and yet I've read something about it somewhere - namely, an extension of the "eustress" hypothesis - restricted caloric intake being beneficial even if not prolonged - I seem to recall an experiment in which the subject animals fasted one day, then ate ad libitum the next day, and on and on - my memory is that although they weren't as thin as the constant CR group, they lived about as long - has this been discussed here, and is anybody trying it for themselves? Guest guest
Hi Hermit: If you are aware of studies in any kind of mammal which show that fasting groups live as long as CR groups, please post a link to it because it will be of great interest to everyone here. Certainly fasting does have interesting biological effects - some apparently very beneficial, others of quite uncertain consequence. But I have never seen a study which showed that fasting EXTENDED MAXIMUM LIFESPAN in any species. CR, in contrast, has been shown to extend maximum lifespan in every species so far tested (lots of them ....... yeasts, fruit flies, worms, mice, rats, dogs, and no doubt others; and studies of monkeys, ungoing now for twenty years but still incomplete, strongly suggest the same is true for them also). For me, fasting would be more convenient than consistent daily caloric restriction. So if there is evidence that fasting is as good or better than CR I would certainly want to see it. The fasting issue was discussed here quite recently. No one at that time offered evidence that it extended maximum lifespan.
