I rarely count calories anymore. After a number of months, it just becomes

" automatic " . Also you tend to eat the same types of foods (lots of veggies,

etc) over and over - trying to vary the KINDS of veggies, fruits, low fat

protein - but their calorie count is about equal.

OTOH, I do weight myself daily and use the scale as a guide to see whether

I've been eating too much. If my weight starts creeping up, I cut back.

Even though all the while keeping in mind it's not really WEIGHT, but

calories.

At the risk of stating the obvious, if we don't count the calories we eat,

but instead monitor our body weight, we are only playing lip service to the

" calories, calories, calories " mantra.

et mea culpa, I don't count calories either these days, but also monitor my

weight. I will from time to time review my typical caloric intake (past due

for review), but frankly have made my recent daily dietary tweaks for

quality or safety issues.

Two recent changes have resulted in noticeably higher hunger levels and

weight loss so I guess I really need to perform that caloric review. I am

apprehensive about losing more LBM as I still try to compete at pick-up

basketball. It has already become a bad joke (to me) that competitors can

simply stand on one of my feet to take me out of play.

That said, I am comfortable with not micro-managing on a daily basis. You

will get a feel for the caloric content of foods and after a while develop a

pattern that works. After you have reached an equilibrium the bathroom scale

will serve as an strong indicator if you are seriously over (or under)

eating.

I still find it very important to know " what " I am eating... I continue to

be amazed by what I learn from reading labels, although these days the

amount of food I consume with labels continues to diminish.

Good Luck and enjoy the journey.

I've been at CR for about 15 years, but I vary in consistency in adhering to

strict calorie limits.

I tend to no long count calories meticulously.

I agree, eating whole foods, appropriately chosen, can minimize hunger and

optimize well being, at a very low calorie level. This level will vary

somewhat depending upon one's lifestyle, activity level, stress level, body

weight, etc.
