Guest guest
: I have posted several times in the past that ice cream lovers can now buy ice cream with NO sugar. These are made by Edy's and Healthy Choice. I have some in my freezer at the moment. Fairly low cal but you must be careful not to overindulge. See my recipe in the " links " for a CR Hot Fudge Sundae using very low cal cocoa with water and sucralose ladeled over no sugar ice cream. Yum. The ultimate in no sugar, low cal goodies though are the sugar free ice pops - something like 5 cal each. There are also very low cal, no sugar Fudgsicles. Also: frozen grapes. Now these actually contain reservitrol, the ingredient in grape skin and wine that may contribute to longevity. Simply wash your grapes and put in the freezer. Pop in your mouth when you get the urge for a frozen sweet treat. They are delicious and nutritious. on 5/7/2004 12:31 PM, at joeasian@... wrote: > ust had some Breyers Carb Smart chocolate ice cream and it's really > good. Guest guest
I have one of those small 1-2 serving personal ice cream makers. It's a cold reservoir that you pre-freeze in your freezer than add ingredients and crank. Instead of cream and sugar I use kefir and fruit with a little extra sucralose, since cold temps damp your sweet sensitivity. This makes a passable Ice cream like treat for a few minutes of labor, hand cranking. I've had a frozen treat at a friend's house which is simply frozen bananas ground up in a suitable blender. The frozen banana had a mouth feel even closer to real Ice Cream than my frozen Kefir. JR PS: As usual read the label.... there seems to be a trend to classify a single macronutrient as bad. The assumption, as long as a food is low or " free " it's OK to eat without restraint. The demonized macronutrient used to be fat, these days it's carbohydrates. Read the label and look at a specific food's impact on your total dietary intake. There are few foods you can eat without any restraint, and you're not likely to find them in the ice cream section. -----Original Message----- From: Francesca Skelton [mailto:fskelton@...] Sent: Friday, May 07, 2004 12:02 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Ice Cream - Breyers Carb Smart : I have posted several times in the past that ice cream lovers can now buy ice cream with NO sugar. Guest guest
I used to try to work in foods like this when I first started CRON. I think this would be okay for someone eating 1500 calories a day or more, if the rest of the diet is pretty healthy. I have quit seeing these foods as treats, but now see them as nutritional boat anchors. I would not eat this. I would much rather eat any of the following foods that are also 130 calories: 1 POUND of raw strawberries 2 grapefruits 7 oz of fresh mango 8 (!) cups of hot chocolate made with water, cocoa, and sucralose I have yet to purchase a low carb food. I read the labels and they do not meet my standards for reasonable food. Plus they are expensive. You can eat Atkins and CRON, but it's going to be a very healthy version of Atkins - lots of non-starchy vegetables and less fat. Also, the low carb foods all seem to be high in soy - which I remember as being questionable for men from the crsociety list. --- In , " " <joeasian@y...> wrote: > Just had some Breyers Carb Smart chocolate ice cream and it's really > good. Guest guest
Francesca- What's in these ice creams in place of sugar? Hopefully not sugar alcohols and other pseudocarbs. >From: Francesca Skelton <fskelton@...> >Reply- >< > >Subject: Re: [ ] Ice Cream - Breyers Carb Smart >Date: Fri, 07 May 2004 13:01:34 -0400 > >: I have posted several times in the past that ice cream lovers can >now buy ice cream with NO sugar. Guest guest
Chris: bear in mind that I consume small amounts of this at a time and certainly not daily. I am also not adverse to occasional " forbidden foods " i.e. I'm not obsessive about it. YMMV. Here are the pertinent ingredients in Healthy Choice: malitol, maltodextrin, aspartame, sorbitol, polydextrose (also contains guar gum :-)) Calories: 110 cal per 1/2 cup compared to 217 for regular ice cream on 5/8/2004 2:41 PM, Dowling at dowlic@... wrote: > Francesca- > > What's in these ice creams in place of sugar? Guest guest
I concur, Francesca- but I have never been able to ingest much maltitol without GI distress. Erythritol I tolerate better, and it also has a glycemic effect, apparently of zero! I wish more of these low cal/carb foods were composed with it, rather than lactitol, maltitol, etc. >From: Francesca Skelton <fskelton@...> >Reply- >support group < > >Subject: Re: [ ] Ice Cream - Breyers Carb Smart >Date: Sat, 08 May 2004 14:58:29 -0400 > >Chris: bear in mind that I consume small amounts of this at a time and >certainly not daily.
