Hi folks:

If people feel the need to 'spruce up' the taste of vegetables to

make them palatable there are alternatives to high fat (and high

calorie) spreads. Much lower fat spreads is one obvious

alternative! Hummus for example.

But why not try chutney? If you are not familiar with chutneys I

suggest go to the supermarket (don't be concerned about the

ingredients at this stage, get any you can find) taste them and ask

yourself whether you like them, and whether, if healthy, they could

be a helpful addition to your diet.

Next, if you do find them tasty (I certainly do), do a Google search

for chutney recipes - you will certainly find hundreds of them,

perhaps thousands.

Then adapt the recipes you find by using the ingredients you find in

them that you believe to be healthy, and the flavorings you find in

the recipes and prefer.

You can make it in bulk and 'can' it for future use.

Perhaps we should even have a " Grand Chutney Contest " for who can

figure out the tastiest, lowest calorie recipe?

Rodney.

These recipes are loaded with all kinds of stuff most of us here

think are very healthy, as well as a few things most of us would

frown on. Many of these recipes contain sugar. Sucralose will

certainly do the job. I am sure there is also a place for guar as a

near-zero-calorie thickener .................. endless

possibilities for sprucing up lots of things.

Now that I have seen the " healthy " chutneys available at Trader Joe's,

at decent prices, I for one have " reformed " . I'll use up my spread

that I've already bought and won't replace them.

Of course, there's also salza (which I often use as a salad dressing

and which has a myriad of other uses). And lime juice.....and even

lemon juice........

I like the salsa on omelets, salads, some veggies. Nice thing - it contains tomatoes. I found a brand I like at target, archer farms, also cheap. Not too much sodium. The only thing I ever put on bread is pnut butter, or some imported cherry preserves.

Regards.
