Guest guest
I have to admire your courage - that is to just come out and admit you're a smoker in a group where you're bound to get a few lectures (and you probably get them from people as it is). CRON would be better for a smoker than non-CRONing.........it's protective from just the things that smoking causes.....no guarantees though....also how much smoking are we talking about here? But why go to all the trouble of changing your diet without changing the rest of your lifestyle? on 5/1/2004 7:57 PM, bjtoll@... at bjtoll@... wrote: > Does anyone have any information concerning whether or not following > a CR diet has any benefit for smokers? Guest guest
I suppose it seems better to do certain things that are beneficial to my health - vegetarian diet, increased cosnumption of water (filtered), regular exercise, meditation and yoga for stress reduction, greatly reducing consumption of saturated fats, and, possibly - following a CR diet ... as opposed to doing absolutely nothing that might be considered as advantageous to my health ... because I have one unhealthy addiction? > > > Does anyone have any information concerning whether or not following > > a CR diet has any benefit for smokers? Guest guest
-----Original Message----- From: bjtoll@... Subject: [ ] mind if I smoke? Does anyone have any information concerning whether or not following a CR diet has any benefit for smokers? Besides all of the obvious - statistics re. cancer, lung disease, heart disease - would it be of any advantage to a smoker to follow the CR diet? ===================== There is very little actual CR research on humans. Since, I expect it would be difficult to get mice to smoke tiny cigarettes there is no specific research that answers your question. Perhaps you could extrapolate from research where they have taken animals with a genetic tendency to die young from cancer or heart disease and successfully mitigated that early demise with CRON. So yes, it appears that CRON might be beneficial against the negative impact of smoking. Further nicotine is a powerful appetite suppressant and lighting up might be an easy way to deal with hunger. I find it very unlikely that the benefit of CRON would outweigh the multiple systemic insults of smoking. As an engineer I'm inclined to approach this from a cost/benefit basis. It seems the benefit from quitting smoking would be far greater relative to the effort it would take, than the modest benefit of practicing CRON while smoking. Getting optimal or adequate nutrition while keeping calories low is not trivial. Smoking and simply not eating much isn't even close. That just sounds like what many smokers already do. Good luck. It's your body, your life, your call. Guest guest
Hi All, john roberts and bjtoll discussed bjtoll's smoking addiction. Smoking causes much premature loss of life in established scientific literature documented in highly reputable journals. Relaxation techniques and filtering water are trivial or nonexistent methods of prolonging the length of life. Wearing seat belts and watching traffic as a pedestrian are of much greater proven benefit. The benefit of achieving greater than adequate nutrition has little or no proven life-extension benefit for ad lib or calorie-restricted eating patterns. Do I mind if you smoke? Not at all. I also support euthanasia. At your age and health, it seems counter indicated, but it is your decision and/or ability to deal with your addiction. I apologize if this message appears to be condescending. I have the mental disease of anorexia nervosa. My quality of life is not of great value to me. I do not wish to die earlier than necessary. The forgoing are my opinions based on my possibly inadequate knowledge. Cheers, Al Pater.
