Yes, this is a good way to receive wireless internet access. I've got a USB wi-fi and a USB 3G modem, and I put these on USB extension cables so the experience is similar to using wired Internet. My best USB extension cord is a 33 foot extension with fiber optics for most of the run, plus a DC adapter that powers the far end of the cable. Guest guest
Hi Marc, Can you tell us the brand name of USB fiber optic extender? I bought one but it really has a bad chemical smell (made by Opticis). Washing w/ alcohol didn't do the trick though baking in a solar oven for several days seems to have helped. That's the same brand that I have, although I never noticed any smell... Marc
Guest guest
BTW, check for RoHS = Reduction of Hazardous Substances. Some cables smell more than others -- I'm not sure whether it's PVC outgassing or other chemicals they have. Great idea on the fiber optic extender. > > > Can you tell us the brand name of USB fiber optic extender? > > I bought one but it really has a bad chemical smell > > (made by Opticis). > > That's the same brand that I have, although I never noticed > any smell... > > Marc >
Guest guest
No, RoHs has nhhting to do with that. RoHs looks f.i. at solderings of print plates. Lead is not allowed anymore in print plates. Cables are not soldered. Guest guest
My understanding is that while RoHS has banned some of the most toxic substances, it is yet to ban PVC. So cables are still mostly made of PVC. PVC requires a plasticizer, which often are " phthalates " . Google that term and you would know it is toxic, hormone-disruptive, carcinogenic, etc. Some cables smell a lot more than others. There are more and less toxic plasticizers. The problem is that there is little safety/disclosure standard. Also flame retardants are often used, which are also very toxic. Generally, in my experience, brand name products (like Samsung, Dell, etc) tend to come with less odorous cables. But it is really luck of the draw when you are buying an individual cable. Apple, Samsung, etc have made a commitment to phase out the most toxic sorts of flame retardants and plasticizers by certain dates. Things are progressing but not fast enough. > > > > > Can you tell us the brand name of USB fiber optic extender? > > > I bought one but it really has a bad chemical smell > > > (made by Opticis). > > > > That's the same brand that I have, although I never noticed > > any smell... > > > > Marc > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > >
