Guest guest
I'm 71, also Peg, and have been studying the subject for years and years, struggling to CR without much success but with relentless hope. I see every evidence here in Florida that obesity is killing and have great confidence that the CR lifestyle is the answer.
Guest guest
We've never polled the members by age. And even if we did, we never get 100% participation in a poll, so there's no way of knowing. But there are certainly admitted senior citizens here (over 60) and I am among them as noted in the Washington Post article recently published. The important thing for you to know is that according to the scientific data, older animals can gain health and more life from CRON even when started late in life. But it must be moderate CRON or you can actually harm yourself and your health as stated by Walford in his book. BTW Walford started CRON on himself at about 67 years old , and although he died relatively young for a CRONIE, the circumstances appear to have been unavoidable. Guest guest
Peg, I, for one, started CRON last September 2003 at age 72. I have lost 25 pounds over these 8 months and I believe I have arrested the continued advancement of a progressive condition called peripheral neuropathy. I am continuing CRON at approximately 1500 calories a day, hoping it will eventually bring about a reversal of the neuropathy. I am running 10-12 miles a week and I am self-employed, working full-time as a business consultant; I am in relatively good health except for the neuropathy and mild obesity over the past 10 years. I have no other serious maladies, take no prescriptives, have no disabilities or handicaps, although eyesight and hearing are showing aging. I plan to run the marathon again in 2005. Most people look at me in disbelief when I tell them my true age. I appear to be about 10 years younger. I am a modified vegetarian, eating no dairy, only very little salmon, sardines, and occasionally, some chicken breast. I haven't read the book on CRON as obtaining books can be difficult - I'm in the Canary Islands. The diet I'm presently trying is a modification of the Paleolithic diet. I've had various books such as " Life Without Bread " and " Eat Yourself Slim' by Michel Montignac which are the low carb diet books but have read that it's best to go at any of these diets gradually. Although I havn't been diagnozed with peripheral neuropathy I believe I may have it. Diagnosis over here is hard to come by. > I am running 10-12 miles a week and I am self-employed, working > full-time as a business consultant; I am in relatively good health > except for the neuropathy and mild obesity over the past 10 years. My thyroid tests came back indicating I'm hypothyroid so for the last month have been taking synthroid - a small amount. Apart from that I'm in pretty good shape though I dont do marathons ;-( I > have no other serious maladies, take no prescriptives, have no > disabilities or handicaps, although eyesight and hearing are showing > aging. I take an anti-cholesterol med but hope that in a while I'll be able to discontinue it. Root vegetables are not popular here so I have to do some searching to find them. I miss the organic foods that I could get in California but plan on getting back there within a few months If there are any websites that give an outline of the CRON diet I'd like to know. Guest guest
> Peg, > What took you to the Canaries? And why are you coming back? > Wally Well the Canaries have a lot going for them if you're into retirement. My medical care and any meds are free - I have UK citizenship as well as US making this possible, as the UK is part of the EU and the Canaries being part of Spain are also the EU. The basic reason I'm here is that I've always had a 'wander lust' - I'm known as 'gypsy momma' to my kids. When my husband died in '98 I returned to the UK to live among relatives but after the first winter there decided the going was too tough - weather-wise. My first move from there was to North Cyprus where I had visited a number of times. I preferred the north - Turkish - to the south - Greek. I lived right next to the Mediterranian for six months and really found the place very congenial - even tho I didn't speak Turkish - but had to return to the UK for a minor health problem - broke my ankle and found the medical care in north Cyprus was almost non-existent. It wasn't long before I was off again and this time to La Palma in the Canaries. I lived there for a year and a half and then a move to this island of Tenerife. As I said above the medical care is fairly good - I get a complete blood work-up every six months and hospital care is good - though I haven't used that yet. Some things are hard to get here and Spain has a pretty miserable record on GM foods - it's the only country in Europe that uses GM (Monsanto) seeds. I'm aware that many toxic substances are still used here - quite possibly DDT - but these islanders are a law unto themselves even though they're supposed to be part of Spain and EU law. I like the ambiance here. If any of you saw footage of the wedding of Prince Philipe last Saturday you'll know what I mean. That wedding outshone the Prince and wedding IMO. It showed royalty with much more humanity than one normally sees. I would say that 'that's the reason I'm here - the getting away from pseudo sophistication which I find is a big part of the US/UK scene and people behaving naturally even though royalty. I'd like to be in a simpler lifestyle and am doing this to a certain extent - still have my internet connection tho as this helps me keep in touch with my sons - 3 of them - and grandchildren - 11 of em. I make trips back to the UK and occasionally to the US - have grandkids in Columbia MD and other fam members in Colo and Calif. I said I'd probably be returning to the US in a few months but I'm not too sure of this. My children figure it's time I got back there but I dont want to be a part of that lifestyle. One gets quite a different viewpoint the longer one is 'out of country' IMO Well that's enough for a starter. BTW very few Yanks here as the $ is doing very poorly. When I first came here i got a Euro for 85 cents but now I pay $1.20 for each Euro so it's about a 30% hike. Canary Peg
