Guest guest
Hi folks: " Iodine Addition to Table Salt Iodine is an essential element in human nutrition. An iodine intake of 100 to 150 µg/day is considered nutritionally adequate. Iodine deficiency occurs with intake below 50 µg/day. Persons consuming this level of iodine are at risk for developing goiter. High iodine intake can also induce goiter. The Food and Drug Regulations state that salt for table and/or general household use shall contain 0.01% potassium iodide. The objective of this project was to assess the compliance levels of table salt and salt, both imported and domestic, for household consumption offered for sale in Canada. Analytical results have demonstrated that over 90% of the samples tested are not in compliance with the Food and Drug Regulations, which indicates that the industry is not properly adding iodine to salt. To determine the most effective risk-management strategy to address this issue, the CFIA is seeking a health-risk assessment from Health Canada. " Rodney.
