Guest guest
Is hair testing an accurate way to test for heavy metals? My Dr wants to do a provoked urine test and I'm not comfortable with that. Have any of you used hair testing? What labs are good ones for that? (Also, can you do hair testing if you bleach you hair????) Thanks! Guest guest
A hair test for heavy metals will not tell you anything useful. Nor will a provoked urine test. Everyone has heavy metals in them -- whether or not they are causing you health problems depends on where they are located in your body. Heavy metals tend to cause people problems when they build up in the brain, nervous system, liver, kidneys, adrenal, and thyroid glands. There are no standard tests for this... other than autopsy. :-) Mercury expert Andy Cutler recommends that people get a " good minerals " hair test (calcium, magnesium, etc.) from Doctors Data, because if your good minerals are all messed up, then that is supposed to be indicative of " deranged mineral transport " due to mercury poisoning. There is also a urinary porphyrin test that will indirectly test for heavy metal toxicity, but it is known to have false negatives if the urine sample is not handled carefully or it doesn't get to the lab quickly enough. I think the best way to test for heavy metals is to try taking something that is supposed to dislodge those metals and move them into the bloodstream, and see if you have an adverse reaction to it. A cheap way to do this is to take a small amount of Alpha Lipoic Acid (50mg?), and see if you notice anything from it -- good or bad. If you feel wonderful or feel horrible from this small amount, that would be a sign of heavy metal toxicity. Oh, and to answer your other question, the hair in a hair test cannot be bleached. However, it doesn't seem to matter where the hair comes from on your body, so pubic hair can be used instead.
