What about the spinal bothers you ‹ other than the idea of large needles in

small places of course : )

I thought having the spinal was great. I was given valium, a little local

anesthetic, and off I went all happy. I woke up alert and ready to get go.

I had a little nausea with the first knee but talked about that the second

time and had no problem at all. No lingering anesthetic effect.

Sounds like You have a great plan and are ready for your surgery.

I am so glad I had these surgeries. I have my life back! And you know the

pain from rehab .... Well it goes away; it doesn¹t get worse. And some of

it, like my most hated stretching lasts only a minute while doing the

stretch and then it¹s gone.

Best wishes for a successful surgery and a great rehab.

Peace,

Jackie

Ask your surgeon for a pamphlet with the exercises in it and do them yourself.

If you have any questions, just ask here. We've all been through it and know

the drill!!

Its funny the thing that bothers me most about the TKR is the thought of the

spinal. I'm glad that I'm not the only one. Right now I'm scheduled of May 18.

I just found out that my insurance will not pay for PT. I'm trying to figure out

how to get PT without spending too much money.

I never even thought of looking for a Group for Knee Replacement until I

realized I could do a Group Search.

I have my Surgery Date for Thursday to have my left knee replaced. I really

dread it, I have heard different stories about it. I did watch my Mom several

years ago have her left knee replaced. She was in alot of pain and said she

would never do it again. Mom is 84 now and has hurt her knee somehow and has

alot of swelling and does not want to have another surgery.

I just turned 52 this past week.

I tore my meniscus about 3 yrs ago. I have had 3 scopes done and the last one my

Dr said the next thing would be a replacement. He said I had alot of Arthritis.

Have had alot of shots and even had fluid removed from my knee.

I had a right hip replacement in 08. I have not had any problems with it. Both

my legs hurt and I guess from my knee hurting I use my right leg more. I have

trouble sitting very long and then standing and I can't put my weight on my left

leg for a few seconds. I have to wait before I can start walking and usually

walk with a bad limp.

I am going to go stay with my mom. I stayed with her after my hip replacement.

She had a Recliner Chair Lift. She uses hers more now so I bought a used one for

$120.00 and took it to her house. That chair is amazing. If you don't have one

you should try to get one. Also a toilet seat riser is nice, that way your able

to stand up easier. I used it after my hip replacement and it was a great help.

We adopted a little girl who has Aperts Syndrome and Shaken Baby syndrome and

has had a stroke and is weak on her left side. When I walk with her I hold on to

her, if she loosed her balance she will lean into me and cause me to loose my

balance. I tore my meniscus because I tried to carry her down our front steps

taking her to the car to go to School. It was VERY painful when it happen.

My husband has a job where he can take off and care for her and take her and our

son to school and pick them up. We felt it might be better for me to stay at my

moms and not have to worrie about having to worrie about our little girl trying

to climb on me to get onto my lap. Mom has no steps either. We have several

going up to our house from the drive and 5 steps up to the door.

I had my blood work and xrays done and ekg this past Thursday. Guess all was ok,

I didn't have anyone say anything different. Had to meet a Dr that I will be

seeing as my own dr is not in the City where I am having surgery. Its nice too

as he is right next door to the Dr who is doing my surgery.

I understand I will be in the Hosp for 3 or 4 days. I will have therapy there

and they will have someone come to my moms and work with me there. I have to

take a blood thinner for a few weeks and each week a nurse will come and draw

blood and test it to see if I have to change the amount of meds.

I dread the part of the epidrual/spinal. I remember when I had my hip

replacement they had me sit up on the bed and lean into the nurse and I was like

I can't relax, I felt so tense and then I seen her raise her hand and thats all

I remember. I do not like being put to sleep ON THE WAY TO THE OPERATING ROOM. I

like to see where I am going and so I was able to move myself over onto the bed

and help until the spinal. I have had them before 3 c sections and one for when

they checked me to see if I have Viral Meningitis (which I did) I just don't

like the feeling of the needle and them touching my back. Can't explain it. I am

more worried about that than anything. Silly I know. Once that I get past the

surgery, I am sure I am gonna be hurting once all the feeling comes back in my

leg. I don't look forward to all the PT there and at home. All the meds and

blood work. I know it will take time. I just wonder how long.

Glad to find you all. Thanks for listening. Take care and God Bless.

Not only are all the exercises posted in the Internet, but there are dozens of

YouTube videos demonstrating how to do them.  I had so much trouble with the

recumbent bike that I looked up a demo on YouTube and discovered what was

wrong.  My legs are too short!

Doing the exercises shouldn't be a big worry,

, I'd never had a spinal prior to my TKR. To

be honest, all I remember is the nurse asking me to

lean forward. I awoke when everything was over and

felt terrific!

I understand your spinal ???.

I requested a spinal and being awake for an abdominal surgery about 20 years ago

and either both docs wanted me asleep for it or the anesthesiologist had good

reason for asking me (last two seconds before IV sedating me)if I have ever had

any lower back disc issues. And when I said I caused a bulging lumbar disc

scenario back in 1980 he said almost happily, " Ooops then no spinal or being

awake for you " and next thing I was " out like a light " .

So am I to assume that might prevent me from considering a spinal for my hip if

it is typical for them to offer it. I might not even want it based on what that

other anesthesia doc told me.

I too did not relish getting the spinal with my 1st baby and having to sit

straight up on table on babie's head so to speak however AFTER that was over it

was nothing short of a delightful experience after a hellishly long and hard

labor.

So there are cons but lot's of pro's too.

I'm the skirmish type. Add that and the fact that I have gone into respiratory

arrest when a spinal went too high I'm sure you can understand. I know it will

be fine.

Now that you mention it, I believe I had a valium prior to the surgery. Perhaps

that's why I was so relaxed? I hope you have the same experience! Please keep

us posted.

I never felt the spinal, they gave me some happy meds and so as for the spinal,

stop worrying about that!!!!!  AS for PT there are some core exercises you can

do yourself and get the same results as pt but you do have to do them twice a

day but they will work. Good luck.

Its funny the thing that bothers me most about the TKR is the thought of the

spinal. I'm glad that I'm not the only one. Right now I'm scheduled of May 18. I

just found out that my insurance will not pay for PT. I'm trying to figure out

how to get PT without spending too much money.

Joan I have some numbness on the left outside of my knee and the doc told me

today that those nerves are gone for good, he also told me that my knee should

be back to it normal size in 9months to a year, it just takes time.  Glad you

got to play tennis!!!!

The hours before the surgery are the most stressful. Just take them a minute at

a time, and think of something else. I remember sitting up in the OR and then

nothing. Heaven.

The first 24 hours are, as I am sure you know, the worst. After that it's not so

bad. Knee is more painful than hip, they tell me, but I was up to the loo with a

walker then next day. I used the walker for about two weeks, and then went to

the cane.

To be honest, I didn't feel myself for 4 months. But since then, I tend to

ignore what my knee is feeling. It is still swollen and stiff, especially if I

spend a lot of time trying for more flex, but I walk great and played tennis

last week. (this week has been freezing here in NYC).

No one, including my surgeon, will say how long it will be swollen, and if the

nerve sensations will ever go away, but I used to limp and now I don't so I

guess I am better off.

Try to be positive and keep good thoughts.

All the best, Joan

Sorry to hear this Diane!!!!! I hope you get relief soon.  I can feel my knee

also, the doc said this is normal and will go away in time.  I also hear the

noises it makes and he said that was normal.  It takes a good year for

everyhing to heal properly.  I know my knee always feels better after

exercising it????  Good luck and I hope it all works out!!!!

First of all, I just want to say thank you to everyone out there who posts about

their surgeries and recoveries.

I had my TKR on Feb 26th, and the surgery itself went textbook perfect. Of

course, the recovery has left a lot to be desired. I'm doing everything that I'm

supposed to do. The PT is critical. I'm down to 2 x a week, but I've joined the

local Physiotherpy Associates Fitness program so I can continue for both water

and land exercises.

Unfortunately, the pain of recovery has been severe (compared to before)and most

of the time, I sure would like to give the knee back. I still have quite a bit

of pain - it's like have a 24/7 toothache with the occasional sharp pains

shooting through my knee. And then there's the swelling. I've been back to work

for 3 weeks, and at least I am able to get the leg elevated by using a chair.

But here's something weird for me - I swear, I can feel the new knee. It's a

feeling of heaviness, especially when I stand up. There are some other weird

feelings, that I simply can't describe. It's the oddest thing. Maybe someone out

there feels like this and has a better description.

Well, since I can't give the knee back, I'm certainly not going to give up. I'm

still hoping that one day (and soon), I will be able to walk without my cane and

be able to run around with my Nanababies.

Hi Donna,

I don¹t know in general about your first question, but my doc does both

knees and hips and he was great.

For me the key issue is whether he is willing to answer questions and what

his history is ‹ how many knees he¹s done, what percentage of problems,

what he considers the risks etc. My doctor was willing to discuss all my

questions and I felt that he was honest and forthcoming. Even though we

were at Kaiser --is sometimes the medical equivalent of a puppy mill or

assembly line -- he took the time to address my questions and concerns.

AND he had good training and is very experienced.

Best wishes for a beautiful new knee and a life without chronic pain and

with great mobility!

Peace,

Jackie

I'm new here, too.  I had about talked myself into going ahead with the knee

replacement, but y'all are scaring me.  :o

I have had 2 series of the Synvisc injections.  They help, but as you know, they

are really temporary.  My calf muscle has now moved up behind my kneecap.

Seriously!  I'm hoping that will relax again eventually.  I have been doing my

PT that I got after the waste-of-time orthoscopic surgery.

If I'm still going to have pain & swelling, then I'm not sure I want to go ahead

with this.  My doctor said last time that my leg was starting to bow.  I don't

like that!

, each person responds individually to knee

replacement. I had mine (quad sparing technique)

last September and recuperated pretty easily. When

I started physical therapy two weeks post surgery my

ROM was 135, although my extension was 10 (as I

recall) rather than zero. The swelling was gone

within two months. I walk a mile every day; I'm

back to playing tennis (maybe not well, but I still

play!). For me it was worth every penny and every

effort to get my life back.

Hi ,

Please don't be scared off by what you read here. Most of the people have good

results and move on and don't post. I'm a year out from my tkr and doing great.

Sure the rehab is hard but in most cases it's over soon and there''s no pain any

longer.

There's going to be some pain and swelling for a while and for some the swelling

is worse than others but eventually it goes down and you don't even remember it

anymore.

Good luck,

Jeff

, I had my tkr April 14th and I'm doing really well!!!!  I walked all over

wal mart today, went to dinner and then back home, I haven't used a cane or

anything, I was falling over the cane and I can't stand crutches.  I am pretty

tired today but my left leg the one with tkr feels better than the right one,

I'm getting that knee done in Sept.  I think we try to rush things, I know I do

anyway!!!!!  My doc told me to give the tkr a good year to get right with my

body.  I know before I had my surgery I was scared to death and then

afterwards, I thought " why did I wait this long " ???  I play tennis and I can't

wait to get back on the court, that will be a while but that's okay, I working

towards that now!!!!!  Take care and remember everyone reacts different to the

surgery so you really won't know until you get yours done!!!!!

My left leg has always been a bit bigger than my right because I'm left handed

so it will never be smaller than the left one but oh well what the hey!!!???

My doc did a good job on my scar or so I think!!!!!  Like you said that's not

what matters, it's being pain free and being able to walk when you want to!!!!

.

I had my knee replaced in 1999, and its still much bigger than my knee that

hasn't been replaced.

It doesn't look very nice, but I always wear jeans etc or nice long pants.,

I have no pain or problem bending it, it just doesn't look pretty but it

functions very well

Hi , Don't get scared. If you don't want to end up in a scooter, you have

to have it done. Everyone is different, and attitude is most important! It is

painful at first, the after a few months it is much better that the bone on bone

you are probably experiencing now. I walked all over Disney World last week, am

going up and down the decks on the QM2 this week, and plan to be playing tennis

and hiking next week in the Yorkshire Dales.

Have the surgery and get on with your life!

All the best, Joan
