Guest guest
Hi Aequalsz: Post #9647: " Hi folks: This US Navy publication seems very helpful for estimating BF%. It uses height and (abdomen circumference minus neck circumference). The article supplies equations - if that is what you like - or tables if you do not like equations. I doubt we will find a source that is appreciably better. Note that for males abdomen circumference is measured horizonally at **navel** level, and neck circumference below the adams apple sloping down somewhat from rear to front. All measurements are in inches. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/kurilla5.pdf Also of interest, from other sources: (at least in the case of males) each one inch decline in abdomen circumference is associated with a decline in BF% of almost exactly 2%. Take for example an individual who, let's say, has an abdomen measurement of 36 inches and a BF% of 20%. Then at an abdomen measurement of 35 inches his BF% would drop to 18%. So, in order to drop his BF% from 20 to 10 he would need to reduce his abdomen circumference from 36 to 31. Guest guest
So what level are we trying to get to? Your guess. Not talking submarines here. Mine is maybe 25%, maybe 18% if I use covert bailey's calc. Guest guest
My Tanita, set to :adult " says 6%. I started with it set at athletic mode, and it would read either 0 or " error. " I'm too lazy to do more than stand on the scale, so I don't have a correlation with the Navy method, yet. Perhaps I'll get around to it if I get bored over Memorial Day Weekend.... >From: " jwwright " <jwwright@...> >Reply- >< > >Subject: Re: [ ] Navy Study - Calculating Body Fat - URL >Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 16:45:26 -0500 > >So what level are we trying to get to? Guest guest
Hi , BF seems to be a fitness thing. I can't find a ref to lifespan. Okinawa book says a review of sources indicates 10 to 20 % body fat. But BF looks like it can vary a lot, and I wonder if the impedance measurement is maybe the best comparison number. I have a device that measured my whole family nearly the same 25%, from a 110 # female to a 215# weightlifter. I just don't a good feeling it means anything for longevity. I'd like to see a correlation of BF to BMI, because guys like Vasily eev had a large gut and set Olympic records (>500#) for overhead lifts. I estimate his BF at 25% using Navy equation. Accumulation of fat is so easy that managing to <100 kcals is necessary and still I know there must be wasted calories. If the body tucks away 100 kcals per day, that could be 8# of fat, pure fat, per year. I averaged 2# per year for 20yrs in weight gain, but how much fat? . Looking at the navy equation if I lose 1 inch in girth that's 1.7 % BF, but that can't be 1.7% of say 180 # = 3 #. Point being that it's weight I want to lose - not body fat. AND, the weight I've lost - 54# corresponds to 7 inches in waist, 2 inches in neck. That's 7.7 # per waist inch, with a drop in calc BF from 33.9 to 25. Seems it boils down to weight and waist inches anyway.
