Hi Candace,

several things affect the flavor of lettuce, water is one, hot weather is another.. bolting (going to seed) is yet another. It could be any of those things or others... You could try planting another variety that is heat resistant. There are several kinds that are supposed to work. Plant some in the shade of other plants too, that can help. I have planted lettuce in the shade of (under) tomato plants. Lettuce is generally a cool weather crop and will get bitter as the season gets warmer, but try some hot weather varieties and see what happens. Im trying 4 season lettuce (merveille d saissons) but havent eaten any yet so dont know how it will work. hmmmmm ... gonna go out and try a leaf and see.......

Also, yes, try watering it a fair amount tonight, then picking early in the morning (store in the fridge for a few hours if you aren't going to use it immediately. It might help.

It's been fairly rainy here. Do you think I could water them every day from now on or is it too late?

Did you grow your lettuce? If it is homegrown it needs a sufficient amount of water or it can get bitter (sour).. guess how i know...

Okay, I finally tried these today. Some questions (of course)

1. First time buying avocados: Are they supposed to be real soft, almost mushy in spots on the inside?

2. First time growing my own leaf lettuce: Is it supposed to be sour? Did I pick it too soon? It wasn't quite big enough to wrap as a taco so I chopped it up and ate it like a salad.

I liked the "sauce" but the sourness of my lettuce ruined it for me. I'll never be a fan of sour.

I think I'm going to drag out the instructions I saved "somewhere" I have for making corn tortillas and put it in there with some grilled mushrooms (those big ones people say taste excellent grilled) I have the name of those saved somewhere on this ole harddrive, too. I'll find a vegan recipe I like besides eating stir fry 17 times a week! It'll happen!

Candace Everything will turn out well in the end. If things are not well now, then it is not yet the end.

Avocados' should be green and barely turning brown when you buy them

with NO SOFT SPOTS.

When you hold them and apply light pressure you should feel them

" give " similar to a good peach or plum. If they have soft spots or

dark brown mushy spots, DONT BUY THEM. The oils are already turning

rancid at this point and you will not enjoy the flavor so much either!

If the outsides were almost black, they may have been over-ripe, hard

to say for sure. I go by the touch method myself and ... if you look

at the point where it was connected to the stem, make sure there is no

sign of mold. Many times when Avo's are over ripe and on there way to

spoiling i have noticed that this point will start to grow fuzzies (mold)

When you slice them open, the fruit should be soft and firm at the

same time and green, not greenish brown. if you have lots of brown

and thready looking fibers, its over-ripe. I'd toss them in the

compost heap.

Nope!

But, there are some great resources here in RR and ABQ

There is a little whole in the wall called Evergreen on 528 that has

a ton of herbs and other stuff. They carry stuff (he's

a master Herbalist somewhere up in the Jemez) I'm sure if you check

at the store, they would know of someone.

Also there is this new place in ABQ called Migun and they do

alternative therapies: http://www.migunworld.com/northAmerica.html

Hope that helps.

What section you in? I'm up in River's Edge
