Hi folks:

In the 'Al/Apricot' study the numbers were that over 24 weeks on

a '500 kcal/day deficit' diet, 32 obese adults lost 6.4% of their

weight (controls) or 10.9% of their weight (dairy supplemented).

A loss of 500 kcal per day for 168 days should amount to a total loss

of 84,000 kcal - or 24 lbs.

If I assume these people started out weighing 250 lbs, then the

controls lost 6.4% of 250 lbs = 16 lbs; while the dairy-supplemented

subjects lost 10.9% of 250 lbs = 27.25 lbs.

This means the additional calcium appears to have been responsible

for burning off an additional 11.25 lbs (27.25 - 16) over 168 days.

That is 39,375 kcal over 168 days, or 234 kcal per day.

Does it seem plausible that eating yoghurt would raise calories

burned by that much, i.e. by about 10%? And how much difference

would that make to body temperature? Any ideas?

Rodney.

What was the additional calcium in the study (which compared to Ca deficient subjects)?

Not to fault the study, but I've been eating lacto for 3+years, and I still have fat I want to get rid of.

I don't doubt dairy calcium is the best source of calcium, and I don't doubt I can get it from veggies either, but linking it to the word "whey" is troublesome. When I compare Ca for a fixed protein amount, clearly the highest Ca source is whey as in SR16, but that's not what's in the cans. "fitness wheys are about half that of dried milk. Milk, yogurt, cheeses are about 35 mg CA per gram protein. 3-4 mg per calorie for fixed protein amount.

Regards.
