Guest guest
Hey, all, I've got a request. I've already posted that I often eat oatmeal with banana for breakfast. Well, I could continue this ritual, or I could broaden out. I know that some of you avoid grain type stuff, but I'm soliciting suggestions for good hot cereal/fruit combinations. I'll tell you what we have here: ground whole wheat, oatmeal, cornmeal, buckwheat groats, manna (which is a sort of farina, cream of wheat thing), and that's pretty much it. Any ideas? It doesn't have to be fruit, I guess, just something to dress up the old porridge. thanks in advance, (|-|ri5
Guest guest
Don't really eat grains and the like, myself. I would advocate more nutritionally dense fruits as well, such as berries and citrus. >From: "chris" <motjuste@...> >Reply- >< > >Subject: [ ] Hot cereal suggestions >Date: Wed, 9 Jun 2004 21:03:22 +0300 > > >Hey, all, I've got a request. Guest guest
I did steamed brown rice for a long time. With ffmilk, and fruit (not banana). To add to your list, grits, oat bran, cracked wheat, and all those funny grain thing they sell at health food stores. Always, with ffmilk and fruit (blueberries, strawberries, papaya, pineapple, guava). But right now I'm doing ffmilk, whey (low lactose) type, and fruit blended (back to the smoothie). regards. ----- Original Message ----- From: chris Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2004 1:03 PM Subject: [ ] Hot cereal suggestions Hey, all, I've got a request. Guest guest
are you using rolled oats or the steel cut oats? Personally, I prefer the steel cut variety. I like to put berries of every color in my bowl when I microwave it, and I use non-fat milk to cook the oats. This makes them very creamy so that it tastes as if it has whole cream on it. I use a bit of sucralose as my sweetener of choice. I know this isn't a hot cereal recipe, but in the summer, when I was cruising (sailing), I would make a meal of Tabuleh Salad for breakfast. This is the borghul wheat, a cereal, (fine grind) rinsed well (5 - 6 times or more) then soaked in water to soften it (about 20 minutes) and then mixed with diced tomato, cucumber, onion, celery, green pepper, radishes, parsley and a small amount of mint leaves, crushed. (Go easy on the mint as IMHO it overpowers the variety of vegetable flavors). Dress it with a light dressing of fresh lemon juice, olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. Though not traditional, I would sometimes add garbanzo or other beans to increase the protein. Guest guest
I'm a big fan of rice bran because of all the nutrients it provides - but eating it alone is not too tasty so I mix with oatmeal or oatbran. I cook it together with frozen blackberries and blueberries and top with yogurt and cinnamon. The berries provide any necessary sweetening. It's pretty filling - I only use 1/4 of the raw bran mix - sometimes 1/3 cup if I'm really hungry. You can get rice bran online at Bob's Red Mill. Guest guest
I know you asked about hot cereal, but I wanted to put out there a cold cereal that I think is quite tasty. I like to eat oats cold in non-fat milk (yes, you can eat oats " raw, " but the folks at Quaker Oats caution that people with sensitive digestive tracts introduce them slowly, not that I necessarily trust corporate America, but I digress). To this I add blueberries and raspberries, banana, cinnamon, raisins, and vanilla soy protein. Actually, it might not be all that CR, but definitely ON. I am in my second month of slowly but surely losing weight and I am focusing on enjoying healthier foods rather than calorie restriction as I do not want to drastically lose a lot of weight. I am not even counting calories, although it is something to which I pay more attention, and have still lost about seven pounds. Peace, > > Hey, all, I've got a request. Guest guest
I just wanted to say thanks to all who offered their ideas. I can see, though, that I should have emphasized one point a little stronger: the cereals that I mentioned in my post are the only ones I have access to here in Ukraine. They don't sell rice bran here, nor steel cut oats. It's quaint, but we mostly buy all our staples at the bazaar. Selection is limited, especially regarding green, leafy veggies, but the one plus is that everything is all very fresh. Fruit season is just starting up now and I'll try some of your suggestions and let you know how it turns out. (|-|ri5
