Guest guest
I recently began adding psyllium to my water 3 times a day to curb my appetite. The package states that taking psyllium regularly can result in dependence. Is this cause for worry on my part? Thanks!
Guest guest
What they probably mean is that some people grow dependent on taking laxatives in order to have a BM. Why not take a couple of days off during the week? on 6/15/2004 1:17 PM, bernadettepawlik@... at bernadettepawlik@... wrote: > I recently began adding psyllium to my water 3 times a day to curb my > appetite. Guest guest
Maybe they meant it leads to needing to wear depends.... :-) Fiber just like anything else can be over done. I lean toward the high side of recommended fiber intake but too much will work against nutrient absorption, which is already an issue if on CR and eating less. Moderation..moderation, moderation... Regarding the other post about metal deficiencies. Sure we should look at everything in a diet planner. If we're short of something, adjust what we eat. Psyllium is used for IBS and colon problems as well as constipation, but as has been said too much can interfere with nutrient absorbtion. I've taken it in the past but haven't made it a daily diet. Guest guest
Hi Bernadette: Here is a link regarding psyllium. It does mention the possibility of dependence. I assume (just a guess on my part) that by 'dependence' it means that if you take it regularly your intestine adjusts to the new, better, environment by, so to speak, 'getting lazy'. Then if you stop taking it you may get constipated (even, perhaps, if that had never been a problem before taking it). Just my guess. But thanks for raising the issue. It is something I had not been aware of. Rodney. > I recently began adding psyllium to my water 3 times a day to curb my > appetite. Guest guest
Opps, did you forget to type the link? Here's one for you: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=9650328 & dopt=Abstract It suggests psyllium as way to reduce the impact of high glycemic foods. Is this already common knowledge around these parts? --- In , " Rodney " <perspect1111@y...> > Here is a link regarding psyllium. It does mention the ssibility > of dependence. Guest guest
I used psyllium every day in my smoothy for a few years (and it's in many 'regular' foods as a filler), and I never noticed any problem when I switched to a different fibre (guar, purely for convenience).
