Hello Callie,

Welcome to the group, there are many members here with young children that

have OCD, you are not alone. You are not stepping on anyone's toes here, we

all are open to listening, sharing, helping and learning from each other.

In the post you responded to I was discussing how my daughter seems to meet

criteria for several disorders and her doctor was hesitant to add more to

her already multiple diagnoses. she is 11, was diagnosed at age 6 with

separation anxiety, followed by generalized anxiety that same year, OCD and

depression diagnosed last year. She show symptoms of others in the

personality and mood disorder categories. Her doctor would like to wait

until she has been through the puberty stage before he commits to other

disorders.

My daughter showed symptoms very early on but a diagnosis was delayed due to

the amount of time involved did not meet the criteria. Your son sounds like

the typical OCD symptoms and having him in therapy is such a wise decision.

Feel free to ask questions, vent, rejoice and keep us up dated as your son

makes progress. We all welcome you and you are not alone living with an OCD

child.

Hi, I have never been part of a chat group before. I do not know the

guidelines. I hope I am not stepping on any toes, please tell me if

I am. I wanted to respond to you because I was reading that most

kids are diognosed at puberty. I have a five year old son we have

been told has OCD. This is from a LMFC. He has contamination issues

and from what I can get out of him thoughts of being harmed. He will

only wear one outfit (I am having trouble getting him to put on

PJs.) Many nights he wears the clothes to bed and I insist he change

his underwear the next day. He claims they protect him from germs

and cougars. This behavior started when he was about 3.5 or 4

years. Little kids get particular and this is what we always thought

this was. He then began to wash his hands a lot. He also began to

wear gloves outside to play so he wouldn't have to touch things

outside. He is a very sensative person and very caring, but he can

have very explosive tantrums over his compulsions and obsessions. We

are doing behavior therapy with him under the guidance of the

therapist. He is aware that his brain " tricks " him. He doesn't know

why he does what he does. Have you heard of this in kids this

young? After living like this, I know this is not normal for a five

year old. I am really surprised as he is so young. We are doing as

much research as possible. THanks for listening. Again, please let

me know if I have just stepped on anyones toes replying to the

message. Callie Happe

Hi Callie, no stepping on toes here!! This group was my first online

group also a few years ago.

Other parents here have had young children like yours with OCD. My

own OCD son is now 16. The OCD began for him a few months before he

turned 12. However, even as young as your son he had a few OCD type

behaviors. One was asking questions all the time for reassurance. I

didn't know that was even a part of OCD before I joined this group.

As you might have read here, OCD is usually diagnosed when behaviors

or thoughts become distressing to a person.

One of my other sons - twin to my OCD one - went through a spell of

OCD at preschool age. His behaviors stopped but I thought I'd go a

bit crazy at the time. For instance, he would call to me to come

downstairs. But when I came downstairs he tried to tell me " how " to

come over to him; something like, take 2 steps, turn left, then...

And if I messed up, total tantrum/meltdown ensured, with tears and

stomping feet and he'd want me to go all the way back upstairs to

start over. (by the way, he had problems with speech, pronouncing

words, and I couldn't quite understand everything he said as to those

directions)

Later he was (and still is a bit) sensitive to certain materials, so

refused to wear certain clothes, gave him the " shivers! " And when he

was that preschool age...and maybe still some in kindergarten...he

hated to get dirty. Would always wash his hands. Was very neat

about things and liked to clean. Would brush the dirt off his

clothes and go wash his hands. Couldn't go barefoot (still hates

that). But he wasn't obsessive over this stuff, wouldn't have a

meltdown if he couldn't wash, for instance (just wipe them on clothes

more I guess!).

You're right about little kids getting particular, it can be hard (I

think) at young ages to decide if it's just " being particular " or

OCD.

My OCD son dealt with lots of compulsions. He said he had to do them

to keep something bad from happening to him. And he also has to get

a " just right " feeling. That could take a LOT of time sometimes, to

get that feeling! About the only time in his life I've ever seen him

have a temper is with his OCD. He'd yell at me! That's unusual for

HIM.

How good that your son understands about the brain tricks! That will

help him boss back his OCD. Is he seeing an experienced OCD

therapist?

We couldn't find a therapist near us who was experienced with OCD and

so I read & read, asked questions here, etc., and we somehow managed

on our own, though I'm sure things would have progressed much faster

with an experienced therapist.

Hope to hear lots more from you! This is a great group, kids (and

parents!) of all ages here.

Callie,

This sounds like my 7 yr old. He has not worn pajamas to bed for 3 or 4

years now. He takes a bath every night then puts his clothes on that he

is going to wear the next day. I don't even try to fight it. I'm not

sure why he does this. I think it is a sensory issue because he will

only wear certain clothes. No jeans or long sleeve shirts ever. Last

summer we couldn't get him to wear shorts except when he was swimming.

Also last summer was the first time he would swim without a t-shirt. He

has to have a shirt on at all times. He has never been diagnosed but has

a lot of OCD tendancies. He chews on his shirts and socks-has actually

chewed holes in them. Worries about germs in food, but has no problem

playing in dirt or mud. He does have to have his bath at a certain time

and can't stay alone in the bathroom or his bedroom. Absolutely refuses

to sleep in his own room. He is deathly afraid of closets and the

shower stall.

I was wodering the same thing myself. We live in a small town in west

central Illinois and there are no support groups for teens with OCD. We

are having trouble finding a good therapist within driving distance.

(16) feels so alone in this. There is one other girl her age in

town with OCD, but she and don't get along too well. Her mother

is the school counselor that we had problems with. (I know, you would

think that having an OCD child herself things would have went better

with counseling. Didn't work that way. Her solution was to get her out

of the school system. According to her, my daughter didn't fit into

their school environment.) I am sorry I don't mean to sound bitter.

Anyway back to my point, we would like to know if there is a group for

teens.

Hello all,

A while back my husband and I set up a message board for children to

communicate with each other, we do have a feature of live chat that could be

added if anyone is really interested in that type of resource. here is the

link for the board, http://www.revflow.com/phpBB2/ . Please email directly

and let me know as a parent what type of limitations you would like to have

on such a resource and we can get it set up during the weekend.

Hope this is a help!

Hi, Thank you for reponding. I also want to say thank you to the

others that have reponded to me. I am feeling much better knowing

others are out there with the same issues. Regarding the PJs, your

situation is very similar. I find it fasinating, as my son has

stated that he can only play with his game boy when he is in his

PJs. Any other toy is off limits unless he is wearing his clothes.

He too only has certain clothes he will wear. There are two outfits

that he will wear. He says they protect him. Recently we convinced

him to try new jeans and he was ok with them so we bought a couple

pairs. We also had a very hard time getting him to wear shorts last

summer. One thing I would like to know is what is the difference

between OCD tendencies and being diagnosed with OCD? I am guessing

it is the impact it has on your life. We were never given a paper or

official word that he had OCD. We were told " yes, these are classic

symptoms of OCD " and we began therapy. Does this mean he has been

diagnosed or just has tendencies. I guess am wondering if when you

are diagnosed with OCD is there something formal that indicates this

or is it an acknowlegement? Am I even making sense? I was just

wondering as you had mentioned your son wasn't diagnosed with it.

Sometimes I think maybe I should not be so worried and I feel like I

am being too dramatic. (my own obsessive nature coming out) Maybe he

is just a little particular and it makes life difficult for the

family. Other times I think there is something not right in his

head, the way his thoughts progress. Any thoughts on this would be

great. Thanks, Callie H.

In our case I say Nick has OCD tendencies because he has never been

evaluated by anyone such as a doctor or therapist. However, I see these

things and know that he has OCD-like symptoms. Right now they are not

interfering with his daily living. , my 16 yr old, was diagnosed

by a counselor after a nurse practitioner suspected something because of

her excessive illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome, stomach aches,

headaches... She was missing a lot of school. The OCD was a major part

of her day. One therapist told me that everyone has OC behaviors, but it

is only when it interferes with daily living that it is classified as a

disorder.

Hello and welcome. I can see that you've already gotten lots of good advice

from others on the site so I won't repeat. I did want to tell you that I have

two children with OCD and that my youngest one showed signs of it at a very

early age. She wasn't diagnosed until she was seven but she was definitely

going strong at the age of five! This site has been wonderful and you will get

a

ton of information from its members. Life will get better. My youngest one

responded very well to treatment (she takes meds and goes to therapy) and I

credit finding out about the OCD at an early age. Your son is lucky to have

someone like you watching out for him! Kelley in NV

I'm 74, but I don't look a day over 56. (a quart of natch'l prune juice or a big bowl of Loosener's Castor Oil Flakes daily .) But since you're poking around for personal poop, I might was well tell all: If you want to know how big I am, it's size 10 EEE shoe (medium length, but very wide). You know what they say, big feet, big shoes. Here's a photo of me, fyi. OK, so I'm no Kirby, but I'm no Andy Wakefield, either. For recreation, I knit humorous cumberbuns, refurbish old electric cheese straighteners and enjoy long walks on the beach or in the park with alcoholic women. I use to indulge in computer sex, but I kept getting nicked by the damn fan ouch! , so I quit in 2002. The rest is personal.
