and also our file " Desirable foods to Include in One's Diet " under the

folder: BEGINNING CRON.

Actually if you only imbibe in " forbiddens " on rare or special occasions,

you'll be Ok. It's the everyday (usual) pattern and calories that makes the

difference.

I do eat shellfish and drink coffee (coffee has many beneficial effects as

we've previously discussed, so I'm not sure why it's on the " neutral " list

below). I eat walnuts, eggs, avocadoes and tofu as well.

Hi Francesca:

Coffee is on my neutral list for the following reason. I DRINK TEA!!!

I drink tea because, even before CRON, my test data suggested it was

highly unlikely I would die from heart disease or diabetes.

The next highest cause of death, second behind heart disease, is

cancer. Tea has been shown to have a protective effect against

eleven different forms of cancer (Meta-analysis published by Tufts

Human Nutrition ....... Research Center three or four years ago).

Rodney.

PS: And it looks like CR will reduce the chances of heart disease or

diabetes to pretty close to zero. (Yes, and cancer also, but not to

as great an extent as heart disease, I think).

PPS: I drink my tea with lemon - a combination of a slice of lemon

and lemon juice.

RE: coffee.

While it does have many beneficial effects, it also may have some detrimental effects such as a tendency to increase blood pressure in some people, a tendency to increase anxiety in some people, and a tendency to reduce insulin sensitivity in some people.

Hi Francesca:

Regarding Splenda ............ As you know Splenda is mostly

maltodextrin, with a tiny amount of sucralose and a couple of other

minor ingredients.

I only just realized (perhaps I read it here?), and according to

sources I have checked, the glycemic index of maltodextrin is 137!!!

I wonder who the genius was who came up with the idea of blending

something with a sky-high glycemic index with a product diabetics

would likely want to use? I wonder if he has been fired yet?

These people must be completely nutz.

Rodney.

(If anyone has information that suggests the glycemic index of

maltodextrin is not above 100, please post the source. Thanks.)

Hi :

Coffee also increases the incidence of ectopic heart beats in people

who have them. (May not be a serious problem, though?).

Actually I do use sucralose which I purchase from Warren. I have no idea

why I wrote Splenda - & right after I sent that post, I thought of posting a

correction but figured it wasn't worth it...........

I also drink both. Coffee may help prevent Parkinson's, and I find caffeine very helpfull in my working life. I also drink black, green, and white tea.

I think each beverage has its own beneficial effects.

I find tea to be THE most helpful substance to keep appetite soothed

between meals... I drink it with & without sucralose.... about 3-4 cups

every day. Tea is at the top of my list. I lean towards green & white

tea with the notion that my teeth won't stain as much.
