Guest guest
My error: Liza May is in this group. Nevertheless, when talking to the media and representing the CR Support Group, the type of article that was in the Washington Post is what we should be aiming for - not wearing extremism on our sleeve. An improvement in diet is within reach of ANYONE . That's what we say in the group description. on 7/1/2004 3:56 PM, Francesca Skelton at fskelton@... wrote: > I winced when I read about that interview with Liza May. Guest guest
You may be right about Liza. I met Liza, have corresponded with her offlist, and thoroughly enjoyed her company and her recipes! And I never meant to offend anyone. So Liza, if you're listening, ............ But many Society members who ARE extremists are the ones that are choosen to talk to the media (and also dominate their board from what I remember). BTW the amount of calories one eats are not necessarily relevant. only eats 1100 cal a day and I don't consider her an extremist. She looks great and is not " concentration camp " thin. What I call an extremist is someone who is emaciated instead of healthy looking. We recently on this board had several scientifically-supported posts which discussed that too low of a BMI or weight was not life-enhancing, in fact to the contrary. on 7/1/2004 4:31 PM, ONeill at uptownguy34@... wrote: > I think, to be fair to Liza May, that her comments may have been taken out of > context. Guest guest
Not to criticize or condone anyone, I don't there are ANY credentials for advising how to do CR in humans. All "experts" have been educated in the domain that excludes CR. Nutrition deals with a "growing body" concept. I think 500 kcals is a suspect level for a woman. 1500 kcals suspect for a man. No doubt we could avoid the press. Moderation until we know better. Regards. ----- Original Message ----- From: ONeill Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2004 3:31 PM Subject: Re: [ ] moderation again! (was: Cholesterol: How Low Should You Go?) I think, to be fair to Liza May, that her comments may have been taken out of context. She is a nutritionist and certainly doesn't advocate eating nothing more than 1 apple a day. I don't think any of the more experienced people in the CR Society would advocate anything like that either. Many have a calorie intake anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000. Check out the profiles, which are available on the site. The younger and less experienced ones might push the boundaries of low-calorie eating, and of course, each person's calorie requirements are different. Unless I'm mistaken, Liza May herself remarked on one novice poster's ultra-low-calorie diet that the guy probably needed closer to 1,500 kCal/day. Further, from what I've come across on the CR Society list, I gather a number of people interviewed by the media have been fairly seriously misquoted on calorie levels and diet practices in general. I don't think I personally would want to talk to an interviewer. As I've said before, the typical media reaction to CRON seems to be that it is something akin to a doomsday cult. When the issue is framed in such a way to begin with, there is a tendency to tailor the facts to fit that view. I've definitely noticed in some of the articles I've read.
